Mini-Chords would not be complete without a look at the near-
legendary Power Chords. Where would Rock and Metal anthems be
without these? Power Chords are actually a guitar trying to act like a
Strumstick, in a way. Of course a Marshall amp stack and screaming
overdrive help, too!

Power chords are combinations of the 1 and 5 notes of a regular

chord, without the other note that would complete the chord. Since
the Strumstick is tuned 1 5 1, holding all three strings at one fret
creates..ta da..a classic power chord. That is easiest to do with one
finger (called a barre, pronounced bar).

The first one is free, all open strings!

To do the barre, straighten your finger out rather than having it be
bent at the knuckles. This may seem counterintuitive since it moves
your hand farther away from the neck, but it is the easiest way to get

all the strings fretted. You can swing your elbow in to help to let your
1st finger roll a little on its edge. That helps hold all three strings
down.

Here are some classic power chord riffs. Each of these has some
syncopation to their rhythm (notes on some off-beats (+) with
silence on preceding beats). Counts given to help explain. You can
see these demonstrated on our website in the Video-Audio tab.

Use barre chords: the number is the fret number your barre is at;
0 means all open strings.
