Check Decking Bending Strength

This document summarizes checks performed on the bending strength and deflection of 90 x 35 pine decking with a 600mm span and 100mm load width. It was found that: 1) The decking has sufficient bending strength (0.23kNm) to resist the calculated maximum moment (0.011kNm). 2) The calculated deflection (0.1mm) is less than the maximum allowable deflection of 2mm. 3) The decking would have sufficient strength (deflection of 15.6mm) if the mid support settled by up to 15mm.

DESIGN DECKING

CHECK DECKING BENDING STRENGTH

(Strength Limit State)

Decking Span = 600mm Load Width = 100mm

• For 90 x 35Pine
fb = 14MPa
E = 6900Mpa
I = bd3/12 = (90)(35)3/12 = 32.1 x 104
Zc = bd2/6 = (90)(35)2/6 = 18375

W = 1.2G + 1.5Q
= [(1.2)(0.25) + (1.5)(1.5)](0.1)
= 0.26kN/m

M* = WL2/8 = (0.26)(0.6)2/8 = 0.011kNm

ФM = Фk1k4k6k9k11k12fbZ
= (0.9)(0.94)(14)(7260)
= 0.23kNm > M* (0.011kNm) ∴ OK

CHECK DECKING DEFLECTION

(Serviceability)

W = G + 0.7Q
= [(0.25) + (0.7)(1.5)](0.1)
= 0.13 kN/m

∆ = 5WL4/384EI = (5)(0.13)(600)4/(384)(6900)(32.1 x 104) = 0.1mm

Limit ∆max = L/300 = 600/300 = 2mm ∆ < ∆max ∴ OK

CHECK DECKING MAX DEFLECTION IF MID SUPPORT BLOCK SETTLED

(Strength Limit State)

ФM = 0.23 kNm

W = 8ФM/L2 = (8)(0.23)/1.22 = 1.28kN/m

∆able = 5WL4/384EI = (5)(1.28)(1.2)4/(384)(6900)(32.1 x 104) = 15.6mm < 15mm ∆allow

∴ Decking is OK if mid support is settled < 15mm

Hence under the strength limit state, deckings are strong enough to span 1200mm at

15.6 deflection.
