Dear Parents,
Summer is here again and with it comes the vacation. In order to give our young
learners respite from the scorching sun, schools would be closed and we have
planned various activities to engage them with fun and frolic.
This is an ideal time for you to bond with your young ones. Summer vacations give
you quality time with your child. This is a time for enrichment. The parents’ role
during this period is of vital importance. This is the time to celebrate and shape the
spirit.
Here are some parental tips which you might find beneficial during your time with
your young ones.
Introduce your child to the concept of time management by drawing up a
schedule. Vary the schedule with fun activities and ensure that the young one
gets enough rest as it is going to be very warm.
Encourage the young learner to bond with friends and relatives. Provide them
ample opportunity for social interaction.
Encourage the child/children to read by taking them to the local library or
bookshop. Help them to select 8 to 10 books that they will enjoy reading.
Holiday homework assignments will be based on the books read by them.
Visit the supermarket in order to observe money handling and basic math
transactions. Warn them about interacting with strangers. Indicate to them that
plastic bags must not be used because they are dangerous for children and
bad for the Earth.
Use the kitchen to reinforce primary years science and math concepts. You
can build up concepts like heat, cold, nutrition, weight etc. through kitchen
activities. Please ensure that all kitchen activities take place under adult
supervision.
Always emphasize safety rules, especially during water and kitchen activities.
Take the learner into the garden to observe nature. On a cool day, a nature
walk might be ideal. Show them a variety of plants and flowers. Let them
observe different kinds of leaves, their venation, types of roots etc.
Let the learners enjoy a good water swim. Enrol them for professional
swimming classes. Be vigilant of their safety at all times and ensure adult
supervision. Educate about them saving themselves from excessive exposure
to the sun and its hazards. Encourage them to use sunscreen lotion, wear sun
visors and avoid looking directly at the sunlight.
2
It’s important for children to keep themselves hydrated by drinking a lot of
fluids and eating fresh fruit and vegetables. They should avoid street food as
rising temperatures encourage food contamination and decomposition. Explain
the science behind it – that rising temperatures provide favourable conditions
for the growth of microorganisms. This is the reason why food decomposes
quickly in summer if not refrigerated.
Remind your children to carry filtered water in water bottles for any outdoor
activities.
Make their indoor experiences fun by inviting their friends and organizing small
group activities such as treasure hunt, dumb charades etc.
Create opportunities to play indoor board games like chess, carom, monopoly,
scrabble etc.
Allocate one household chore like watering the plants or washing the car to
inculcate a sense of responsibility in them.
Motivate them to rise early in the morning, take them for morning walks ,
encourage them to exercise, do the morning newspaper crosswords , mazes ,
quizzes etc. Keep them aware of general knowledge and current affairs.
Art and craft projects are ideal to do together at this time of year.
Limit and supervise the use of television and the internet. It is a great source
of innovation and inspiration only if used discreetly.
Watch informative channels such as National Geographic, BBC and Discovery
with your child. Guided watching will generate their interest in the program;
you can discuss the programs at the dining table or during family time.
Enclosed you will find a selection of engaging activities that will energize your child
and enhance creativity. These activities will keep your learners abreast of their work,
keep them engaged and ready to enjoy learning through play.
Important Information: New Assessment Pattern
CBSE has suggested a new pattern of assessment from Grade 6 onwards where
maximum emphasis is going to be on pen and paper assessment, which is very
different from the CCE pattern. The school is taking special care and measures from
Grade 3 onwards to prepare our learners for writing the papers well. So we have
included enough writing exercises for our learners to be prepared for this change.
Happy Vacation!
