C. Making Mixed Media Collage Art - Tips, Techniques, Descriptions and
Definitions
1. Mixed media – use of various types of media – collage, paint, paper
glue, special effects and special mediums to make a piece of art.
2. Collage - gluing different items, objects, papers or materials
together on a background to make art.
3. acrylic painting – use of a quick-dry paint made of a plastic base. It
Blends well together to mix colors, can be used as a thick paste,
medium gel paint or a very thin watery glaze, mixes and rinses with
water, can be painted in layers that are transparent (see through or
opaque (full coverage). No need for thinners or chemicals.
4. Color mixing – mixing together to make new colors, mixing with
white to make light hues, mixing with dark colors to make dark,
colors. Nothing is ever just one color. Color mixing on palette, color
mixing on canvas, color mixing with the brush, total mixing, half
mixing, marbling or double loading the brush for gradual mixing.
Ocean – light blues, dark blues, blue greens, yellow greens, light
greens, dark greens.
Sand – a mixture of white, brown, yellows
Seaweed – a mixture of green, browns, yellows and blues
Sharks – white, light and dark greys, bluish greys and black
Fish – many colors, contrasting colors, matching colors in different
hues and tones, just two or 3 main colors, stripes, dots and wavy
lines.
5. Design Secrets– dividing the paper into thirds, not halves. Planning
ahead… Loosely or tightly planning, but do plan. Don’t despair over
accidents or mistakes…some accidental designs are the best designs.
Most mistakes can be fixed..it’s all part of the process of learning.
Contrast- background to main subject – (background dark, subject
light or vice versa) contrast between background and subject ( yellow
on blue , or orange on green) using black and white lines or outlines
for contrast.
Sizes and quatities of subjects – things in threes, different sizes –
mama, daddy and baby. , things in twos – one large, one smaller, one
thing – large enough to fill the space. See the Project samples on Blog
Choose a main star subject and then choose accents – can’t have 5
main stars all the same size or 10 accents all the same size.
Lines – horizontal, vertical and diagonal or wavy---
have a nice mixture of all….remember in nature very few things are
perfectly straight.
Draw a sample of a :
horizontal line
wavy line
vertical line
diagonal line
6. Techniques for success….
Rinse your brush between using different colors of paint. Don’t mix
paints on the brush or in the cups.
Always use your paper towel to dry excess water off brush.
Pay attention and follow directions.
Focus on each step to completion and try not to waste time.
Each step has to be completed in a certain time frame.
Tissue paper is thin and has to be painted very carefully – try to use
as dry a brush as possible, very gently, put down only one coat of
paint in one direction, once you put down the paint, don’t go back
over it or the tissue paper will tear. Put down different colors next to
eachother to make it interesting and let them bleed together on the
paper. This paper needs to dry quickly so the less paint the better.
Just put down paint and try to leave it alone, beginners have the habit
of “overworking” their art….usually less and simple is better than
more and complicated. When gluing the paper to the canvas, use a
light coat of glue and wipe off the excess. Trust that once you finish,
everything will work together nicely as a whole.
7. Special Effects: using special acrylic or other mediums such as
glossy medium for a glossy finish, glass bead gel for a sandy texture
on the sand, wadding up the tissue paper before you paint it for a
wrinkly look and texture, using textures such as netting or sponges to
apply paint for a special looking pattern, using your brush in a special
way to create an effect, such as waving the brush up and down in a
wavy line to paint the waves in the water.
8. Accent lines : outlining with black or white paint pens, adding dots,
stripes or wavy lines, adding special parts like eyes, gills or fins.
Scales. Your finishing touches can make the picture!!
Steps to the Project and Times:
1.5 minutes - First choose your pattern.
2.5 minutes- Draw the design onto your tissue with a pencil.
3.Draw the parts of the design that need to be different colors on a
separate area of the tissue.
4.5 minutes - Make sure you have the paint colors you want available,
mix them together on your palette if necessary – yellow and red to
make orange for example.
5.20 minutes - turn over the tissue and so that the pencil drawing is
facing the bottom. Very carefully and gently paint the paper on
the tissue paper opposite side of your drawings – you will use the
drawing to cut out your piece later.
6. put the tissue aside to dry – it needs 15 to 20 minutes.
7.10 minutes– Paint the canvas – blue wavy ocean water
And the sandy bottom, or the blue water and the blue sky
background for whales or dolphins jumping.
5 minutes – paint the edges of the canvas black
8.10 minutes– cut out your tissue paper designs on pattern lines.
9.20 minutes– glue your paper designs by putting glue on the back of
the paper and onto the canvas. Glue on pieces and parts of the
main subject or subjects. Then glue on accent pieces.
10.Wipe off extra glue.
11.dry with blow dryer if necessary
12.5 minutes – add finishing touches, outlines, eyes, lines dots, etc.
write
13. name on back or sign at bottom of painting
14. 5 minutes - get in line for scanning artwork
15. 5 minutes - If time, finish with a final coat of glossy modge-podge
16.clean up area and let final coat dry on the way home.
