TA1 Interchange Acknowledgment
Ø Purpose
§ Reports the status of the interchange envelope only by
the receiver
• The successful receipt of the interchange
• The results of processing the interchange envelope

Ø Use is by trading partner agreement
§ HIPAA neither mandates or prohibits
Ø TA1 is a single segment
§ Transmitted without the GS/GE envelope
Ø Can be included in an interchange with other

Using the 997 Functional Acknowledgment
Ø Do not acknowledge a 997 FA
Ø 997 FA should not be sent to report errors in a previous
Functional Acknowledgment
Ø Functional Group Header Segment (GS) used to start the
envelope for the 997 FA
Ø Application sender’s code and application receiver’s code
from the functional group being acknowledged are
exchanged
§ one acknowledgment functional group responds to only
those functional groups from one application receiver’s code
to one application sender’s code
Ø Only one Functional Acknowledgment Transaction Set per
acknowledged functional group

824 Application Advice Transaction Set
Ø Purpose
§ Report the results of an application system's data content edits
of transaction sets
§ Results can be reported at the functional group and
transaction set level
§ Designed to accommodate reporting the acceptance, rejection
or acceptance with change of any transaction set
§ Should not be used in place of a transaction set designed as a
specific response to another transaction set
