Factors That Affect Reaction Rates

This document outlines five stations to investigate factors that affect reaction rates: surface area, concentration, nature of reactants, temperature, and presence of a catalyst. Students will make predictions, observe reactions, and explain how varying each factor influences the rate of reaction. The stations involve dissolving sugar cubes and salt in water, diluting bleach into colored water, dissolving Tang in hot vs. cold water, and watching a video about catalysts.

Station #1 - Surface Area
POE how surface area affects the reaction rate
Sugar cubes vs. sugar

Big or small, we like them all! This reaction is the dissolving of a sugar cube in water. How does
surface area affect the rate of this reaction?

Station #2 - Concentration
POE how concentration affects the reaction rate
Diluted bleach into yellow food coloured water

This is a game of concentration! For this reaction you will start with two beakers of 10mL of
water with 2 drops of yellow food colouring in each. In one beaker add diluted bleach into the
yellow water (1 drop at a time). In the other beaker add the regular bleach (1 drop of a time).
How does concentration affect the rate of the reaction?

Station #3 – Nature of the Reactant

POE how the nature of the reactant affects the reaction rate

You will dissolve salt in water, and sugar in water. Is there a difference between these two
reactants? Does the reactant affect reaction rate?

Salt: NaCl
Sugar: C12H22O11

Station #4 - Temperature
POE how temperature affects the reaction rate
Temperature of the water when dissolving Tang

Some like it hot (some don’t). You are going to make some Tang, but are under a time crunch.
How would temperature affect the rate of this reaction?

Station #5 – Presence of a Catalyst

POE how the presence of a catalyst affects the reaction rate
Video

Watch the following video. How does the presence of a catalyst affect the rate of reaction?
