CLINICAL NURSING ESSAY –TYPE TEST ITEMS

SCENARIO 1 ITEM 1
Henrietta is 6 months old. She is the second child of an 18 year old un
married factory worker. Within the past 6 weeks Henrietta was admitted to
the pediatric ward with repeated attacks of gastroenteritis. Investigations
revealed that the community in which they live has been experiencing
problems with the collection and disposal of garbage.
ITEM 1
Design in no more than 500 words a teaching plan for primary prevention of
gastroenteritis in one month to 5-year age group, for the community in
which Henrietta lives.

Total 20 points

SCENARIO 2 ITEM 2
Mrs. Riggs is a 40-year-old married woman with 2 teenage daughters. She
has a History of fibroids and was admitted to the ward for hysterectomy the
following day.

ITEM #2

Discuss the preoperative nursing care for Mrs. Riggs with reference to the
following needs:
I. Psychosocial (6pts)
II. Safety and Security (12pt)
III. Nutrition, Fluid and Electrolytes (4pts)
IV. Rest, Comfort and Activities (4pts)

SCENARIO 3 ITEM 3
The end of year statistics indicated that the highest percentage of
admission to the male surgical ward was for adolescents with fractures due
to road traffic Accidents

SCENARIO 4 ITEM 4

Mr. Brandon age 79, a resident at the senior citizens home, was admitted to a
medical ward in the general hospital. Assessment reveals that he experienced
shortness of breath, dyspnea, productive cough and activity intolerance. He
also experienced difficulty with eating and sleeping. Mr. Brandon who is a
chronic smoker has been diagnosed as having Chronic Airflow limitation
formally called COPD.

ITEM 4
Develop a Nursing Care plan for Mr. Brandon for the first 72 hours focusing
on the following needs
