Sura Mulk (or Sovereignty)
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
The Sura opens with an assertion that Allah is the Blessed in Whose
hands is all sovereignty. He has power over all things. He created life and
death to test human beings in their actions. He is the Mighty, the Forgiving
One. He has created the seven skies one above the other. Can anyone find fault
in the work of the Merciful? Turn up your eyes: Can you detect any rift? Your
eyes will in the end grow din and weary. The lowest sky is decorated with
stars and missiles for pelting devils.
For the disbelievers there is Fire of Hell. It is definitely a horrible place
with Blazing Fire where they will live for ever. Every time a multitude is
thrown therein, its keepers will say to the: “Did no one to warn you?” “Yes”,
they will reply, “but we rejected him and said that Allah has revealed nothing”.
Thus, the disbelievers confess their guilt. But the time of regrets and
repentence was long past. The door of mercy of Allah was completely closed
on them. They will stay in Hell.
Allah highly appreciates those who fear their Lord though He is
Invisible and they do not see him. These shall be forgiven and richly rewarded.
Allah hears what is spoken secretly in confidence as well as what is uttered
audibly in open; may He knows what is cherished secretly in human hearts.
There is nothing strange about it. He is the Creator, the Gracious and All-
knowing. It is He who has subdued the earth to you. Walk about its regions
and eat of His provisions. To Him all shall return (at the resurrection).
As a reminder the Meccan infidels are asked: Are you confident that
He who is in heavens will not cause the earth to cave in beneath you and cause
you to be swallowed by it as it shakes? Are you confident that He who is in
heavens will not let loose on you a sandy whirlwind? If that occurs, the
infidels would know to their consternation how terrible indeed was Allah’s
warning to them. But even otherwise before the above fate overtakes them,
they should learn from the past history that certain earlier communities treated
the warnings as futile, were terribly punished by Allah.
Do they not see the birds above their heads, stretching their wings and
closing them? Who sustains them high up? None except Allah, the
Compassionate, graciously sustains them in their flight and supplies them their
food. He is the Observer of every thing and Aware of. Who is it that will
defend you like an entire army, if not the Merciful? Not the greatest array that
man can muster is of any use against the Wrath of Allah; while the constant
watchful care of Allah is all-in-all to us, and we can never do without it. If the
godless wander about in search for blessings otherwise than in the Mercy and
Grace of Allah, they are wandering in vain delusions. Or who is there to
provide livelihood to you if He with-holds it? But they obstinately persist in
rebellion and aversion. Truly, the unbelievers are in error. What? Is he who
grovels on his face better-guided or he who walks along the straight road?
It is He who created you and given you the ears, eyes and heart. Yet
man is seldom thankful. It was He who multiplied the mankind on earth, and
before Him shall all be assembled. They ask you: “When this will happen?”
Allah alone has knowledge of that. Prophets mission is but to warn the
people. But when they will see it drawing near, the faces of the unbelievers
will turn black with gloom and a voice will say: “This is the doom which you
have challenged?”
