State Swim’s
Philosophy
Mission
Statement
State Swim, founded by former Australian
National Swimming Coach and educator David
Urry, have been providing aquatic education
to young Australians for over 40 years.
Over this time we have developed a strong
philosophy on how children best learn the
“To promote swimming skills required to make them strong, safe and
as a lifetime activity for confident in the water.

health and safety, by Our four decades of experience have shown

that children learn through a combination of
providing tuition in a reviewing previously learned skills to ensure
professional, effective that they form a habit whilst also introducing
new skills to keep the swimmer challenged,
and friendly environment, motivated and constantly learning. Our
program is designed around this philosophy
and to pursue excellence ensuring that children strengthen previously
and leadership in quality learnt skills to ensure that when they move
on to more challenging skills, they do not lose
and service.” that base.

“A swimming system
designed for all
skill levels”.
4
Learning to swim is like building a house, if the foundations are not strong, the end
product will not be strong. We take this attitude towards all that we do. If a young child
is not comfortable with a current skill then there is little point in introducing them to the
next, more advanced skill. For example, if a child is struggling with their basic breathing
technique, why complicate things by introducing the next, more complex progression.

Electronic Visual Aids

The State Swim program breaks down
all of the important building blocks
of learning to swim and presents
them in bite size pieces for our
children to develop and master. We
have introduced the use of electronic
devices such as tablets to enhance
the education process. The short skills
videos give additional perspective for
visual cueing. At State Swim we are
always seeking the best way to produce
strong, safe, confident swimmers.

One of our major benefits over large recreation
centres is that when your child is having their
swimming lesson at State Swim, there are no
other activities going on around them. This
allows them to concentrate on the important job
at hand instead of wondering when they can get
to the waterslide or play pool!!
Our facilities are either purpose built for our
requirements, or in the case of existing centres,

State Swim they have been modified to suit our needs.

Nevertheless, all of our centres are designed to
create the optimal learning environment.
Facilities All of our pools are heated to 32 degrees
and include full changeroom and shower
facilities and a swim shop, where you can
purchase bathers and other swimming

to learning. Most State Swim schools are equipped with
state of the art and environmentally friendly
water purification systems that results in fresher
and cleaner water without the overpowering
smell of chlorine. This modern water treatment
technology includes an Ultra Violet (UV) light
system which significantly reduces the amount
of chlorine used. The benefits for the swimmer
include:
• Gentle on children’s skin, and in
particular babies
• No more sore and red eyes after swimming
• Little or no skin irritation, particularly
those who suffer from eczema
• Better environment for asthmatics

PROGRAM

The State Swim ‘Swim n Play’ program has been specially designed for children
aged 6 months to 4 years of age. It is an aged based infant and toddler program
designed to introduce the child to the aquatic environment and develop water
familiarisation skills whilst respecting the water. Children under 2 ½ years will
start in the Waterbabies class with their parent or guardian in the water with
them. Once the child is over 2 ½ years, they are ready to join the Kindergarten
class and their parent is no longer required to enter the water.

PROGRAM & Sport

The State Swim ‘400 Gold’ program is for

children from 4 years of age and over and is a
skills based program, meaning that your child
will progress from one stage to the next as certain
skill requirements are met. This program caters
for graduates from the State Swim ‘Swim n Play’
program and for students new to our program, and
is suitable for the complete beginner through to
the more experienced swimmer.

The State Swim ‘400 Gold’ program’s eight stages

will take your swimmer step by step through the
important skills of swimming and all graduates
will be able to demonstrate competence in all four
competitive strokes as well as some deep water
survival skills. As the name suggests, graduates
of the State Swim ‘400 Gold’ program will be
able to swim 400 metres of Freestyle non stop
with correct breathing and technique in a relaxed
and rhythmical Freestyle. On completion of the
program, the graduate can be considered a strong,

FAQ’s

Q How long will it take for my child to learn to swim?

This really depends on your expectation of ‘learning to swim’. At State Swim

A we believe a child has not learnt to swim until they can swim 400 metres of
Freestyle in a correct rhythmical style, and that a child should achieve this
before they leave primary school.
Our program is designed to take children from being a complete beginner
through to this stage.

Q Are your Pools indoor and heated?

Yes they are, all of our swimming schools are indoor modern facilities
A and we heat our water to 32 degrees Celsius to ensure optimal learning
conditions for all swimmers. See page 7 for more information.

Q Do your swimming lesson programs run by the term?

Our programs run all year round, we believe for a child to achieve results
A they should be enrolled in our program on a regular basis. Most children
will swim with us once per week and our grading system allows for our
supervisory staff to monitor your child’s progress and promote to the next
level as soon as they have achieved the goals for the class in which they
are in. See page 21 for more information.

Q Do you award certificates?

Yes we do. We believe in recognition of the child’s efforts and we have

A a full series of Merit Awards and Class Graduation Certificates. We also
recommend that whenever your child does receive a certificate or Merit
Award that you congratulate them and make them feel special for their
achievement as this will help in further developing their confidence.
See page 10 for more information.

Q What do I do if my child is sick and unable to attend their scheduled lesson?

In the event of a missed lesson we ask that you contact us via phone,
A email or SMS to advise us of your absence. As long as this is done prior to
the booked lesson we will credit you with a makeup lesson which can be
used as an EXTRA lesson or during our school holiday SWIMVAC program.
See page 22 for more information.

Make up
Policy

Every now and then you may find that you are unable
to attend a lesson for whatever reason. So long as
you let us know by phone, SMS or email and prior to
your lesson that you won’t be there, we will give you
a make up lesson that you can use on another day.
SMS details for your State Swim Swimming School are
available at reception and on the website.
A make up lesson can be used as an extra lesson in any month that you have already booked in
and are valid for 3 months. We understand that some things are out of your control and we do
not want to penalise our families for missing a lesson here and there. The make up lessons are
a great way to ‘make up’ for a missed lesson and ensure continuity of your child’s education!
Of course you will need to book in to do your make up lesson and it will depend on what times
are available. If you book in for a make up lesson and do not attend with out informing us
prior, then that make up lesson will be forfeited.
Please note, make up lessons do not apply to adult classes and may not be used as a ‘fee
adjustment’ in your regular monthly payment.
Important facts about Make Up lessons:
• You must inform us PRIOR to a lesson that you are unable to attend to receive your make
up lesson
• Booking and not attending a makeup lesson will forfeit the makeup lesson
• Makeups are valid for 3 months
• Must be used in a month that you have a current
permanent booking
• Cannot be used to adjust fees
• Are not applicable to adult classes or casual
users of State Swim Swimming Schools
• Can be used to pay for SWIMVAC, however they
cannot be attained from missed SWIMVAC lessons

Some important information each time you visit your

State Swim Centre
• Please aim to arrive 10 minutes prior to the start of your class and see the customer
service team prior to entering pool deck each time you attend. This will ensure we can
attend to all customers as quickly as possible and in the event of an emergency be able to
do an accurate head count.
• Please bring along your own goggles and if required flippers. Due to health regulations we
are unable to provide goggles or flippers for children to borrow.
• For children who are not toilet trained, it is required that they wear a swimmer nappy.
If they are toilet trained we encourage you to take them to the toilet prior to the start of
the class.
• Your State Swim swipe cards assist us in processing you quickly and easily through our
reception area. With a large number of people coming through the centre during each
session it would assist us greatly if you could have your card ready when you arrive.
• Due to the cost of the swipe cards there is a $5.00 replacement fee if your card is lost or
misplaced.
• We understand that watching your child swim is a great experience and one that you
may wish to photograph or video. In this instance please speak with the supervisor for
permission prior to taking the photo or video and that you only capture your child.
In addition to this please understand other customers sensitivity with regards to video
and that your request to video may not be allowed if any other customers in the water
express concern.
