DEVELOPMENT OF MALAYSIAN STANDARDS

The Department of Standards Malaysia (STANDARDS MALAYSIA) is the national

standardisation and accreditation body.

The main function of the Department is to foster and promote standards,

standardisation and accreditation as a means of advancing the national economy,
promoting industrial efficiency and development, benefiting the health and safety of
the public, protecting the consumers, facilitating domestic and international trade and
furthering international cooperation in relation to standards and standardisation.

Malaysian Standards are developed through consensus by committees which

comprise of balanced representation of producers, users, consumers and others with
relevant interests, as may be appropriate to the subject in hand. To the greatest
extent possible, Malaysian Standards are aligned to or are adoption of international
standards. Approval of a standard as a Malaysian Standard is governed by the
Standards of Malaysia Act 1996 (Act 549). Malaysian Standards are reviewed
periodically. The use of Malaysian Standards is voluntary except in so far as they are
made mandatory by regulatory authorities by means of regulations, local by-laws or
any other similar ways.

The Department of Standards appoints SIRIM Berhad as the agent to develop

Malaysian Standards. The Department also appoints SIRIM Berhad as the agent for
distribution and sale of Malaysian Standards.

MS 2103:2007

FOREWORD

This Malaysian Standard was developed by the Technical Committee on Cables and Cable
Accessories under the authority of the Electrotechnical Industry Standards Committee (ISC E-
1). Development of this standard was carried out by the Malaysian Cable Manufacturers
Association which is the Standards-Writing Organisation appointed by SIRIM Berhad to
develop standards for cables and cable accessories.

In the preparation of this standard, consideration was given to IEC 60502-1:2004 Second
edition, Power cables with extruded insulation and their accessories for rated voltage from 1
kV (U m = 1.2 kV) up to 30 kV (Um = 36 kV) – Part 1: Cables for rated voltage of 1 kV (Um = 1.2
kV) and 3 kV (Um = 3.6 kV), published by the International Electrotechnical Commission.

The Technical Committee has determined that minor differences in construction and test
requirement to the IEC 60502-1 are necessary and this has been incorporated to comply with
the prevailing practices of cable manufacturers and users in Malaysia. These are as follows:

a)spark testing of insulation has been included;

b)requirement for oversheath markings has been included;

c) standard requirements for drumming and packaging of completed cables have been
included; and

d)tests at low temperature for insulation and oversheath which are not suited to conditions in
Malaysia have been excluded.

Compliance with a Malaysian Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal
obligations.

1. Scope
This Malaysian Standard specifies the construction, dimension and test requirements of PVC
insulated, PVC sheathed multi-core cables, armoured for operation at rated voltage 600/1 000
(1 200) V.

The cable as prescribe are generally use for low voltage, underground fixed installation
system for the distribution network. It is not intended for use in prolonged water logged
conditions and for specialised applications (e.g. welding, crane lifting, mines, aerial), which
are covered by other Malaysian Standards, where applicable.

2. Normative references
The following normative references are indispensable for the application of this standard. For
dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition of
the normative references (including any amendments) applies.

3. Definitions

For the purposes of this standard, the definitions given in IEC 60502-1 apply.

4. Construction

4.1 Conductors

4.1.1 The conductor shall be Class 1 or Class 2 plain aluminium or annealed copper
complying with the requirements of MS IEC 60228.

4.1.2 The nominal areas of the conductors are given in Tables 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.

4.2 Insulation

4.2.1 The insulation shall be PVC/A in accordance with IEC 60502-1.

4.2.2 The nominal and minimum thickness of insulation shall be as specified in Tables 1, 2,
3, 4 and 5. For each piece of core, the smallest value measured shall not fall below 90 % of
the nominal value by more than 0.1 mm.

4.3 Core identification

The cores shall be identified by colours for cables up to 5 cores and by numbers for cables of
6 cores and above.

4.3.1 Colour coding shall be in accordance with the following sequence:

Number of cores Identification

Two-core Red, Black

Three-core Red, Yellow, Blue

Four-core Red, Yellow, Blue, Black

Five -core Red, Yellow, Blue, Black, Green/Yellow

The colour shall remain identifiable throughout the length of the cable.

4.3.2 Numbers of each core shall be printed in a colour contrasting with that of the
insulation. Numbers shall be marked sequentially starting with number 1. The intervals
between adjacent numbers shall not exceed 70 mm. The height of individual number shall not
be less than 1.5 mm.

4.4 Laying up

The outermost layer of the laid-up cores shall be of right hand direction of lay. Where
necessary, non-hygroscopic fillers may be applied integrally with the bedding to form a
compact and circular cable. There shall be no adhesion between the bedding and the
insulation. Where the bedding is applied integrally with the fillers, it shall be possible to strip it
from the cable without damaging the insulation of the cores.

MS 2103:2007

4.5 Bedding

The bedding shall be an extruded layer of PVC ST1 in accordance with IEC 60502-1. Unless
otherwise specified, the colour of the bedding shall be black.

The nominal and minimum thickness of extruded bedding shall be as specified in Tables 1, 2,
3, 4 and 5.

4.6 Armour

4.6.1 Wire armour, which consist of a single layer of galvanized steel wires of the size
indicated in Tables 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, complying with the requirements of IEC 60502-1, shall be
applied over the bedding.

4.6.2 When joint in armour wire are necessary they shall be brazed or welded and any
surface irregularity shall be removed. A joint in any wire shall be not less than 1 m from the
nearest joint in the complete cable.

4.6.3 The direction of lay of the armour in cable shall be left hand.

4.6.4 Layer(s) of binding tape may be applied over the armour.

4.7 Oversheath

The oversheath shall be PVC ST1 in accordance with IEC 60502-1, shall be applied over the
armour. Unless otherwise specified, the colour of the oversheath shall be black.

The nominal and minimum thickness of the oversheath shall be as specified in Tables 1,2,
3, 4 and 5.

4.8 Oversheath marking

The oversheath shall be marked with a complete set of elements in the order specified below.
The distance between the end and start of each element shall not exceed 50 mm while the
distance between the end and start of each complete set of element shall not exceed 250
mm. The markings shall consist of upright block characters of approximately the same height
of between 1.5 mm to 10 mm.
