HURON TOWNSHIP POLICE DEPARTMENT 36500 S. Huron Road New Boston, Michigan 48164 Everette Robbins Phune: (734) 753-4400 Mark Perkins Chief of Police Fax: (734) 753-2219 Deputy Chief Letter of Commendation To: Officer Ahmed Kassem, Huron Township Police Department Officer Troy Rickelmann, Huron Township Police Department Sergeant Robert Kelch, Huron Township Police Department Dispatcher Karen Stackpoole, Huron Township Police Department From: Everette Robbins, Director of Public Safety Re: Life Saving Efforts Date: January 31%, 2018 On January 30, 2018 at 2:19am. Officer Ahmed Kassem was on routine patrol in the Hawthome Woods Community, specifically the 37000 block of Dianne Lane. Officer Kassem observed a snow blower that had been left unattended in the middle of the road, Officer Kassem found the situation peculiar and began to investigate, attempting to find the owner. A short time later, Officer Kassem located the owner of the snow blower who stated that he had abandoned the snow blower after being chased away by a large dog who was running freely in the neighborhood. Instead of dismissing this incident as just a dog at large and based on his instinct, Officer Kassem continued to investigate. After taking the initiative to knock on multiple doors in the area, Officer Kassem located 2 man who identified the dog as belonging to a neighbor in the 37500 block of Dianne Lane. The ‘man advised Officer Kassem that he had not seen his female neighbor in nearly a week. According to Officer Kassem’s report, the dog appeared cold and hungry, which was out of the norm for the female neighbor. Not stopping there and continuing a neighborhood canvass, Officer Kassem contacted a second neighbor who stated that it was abnormal for the dog to be left unattended. He also stated that he had not seen his neighbor in a few days. Officer Kassem continued to investigate, knocking on the door of the female dog owner; the dog waited by his side the entire time at the door. After knocking several times and getting no answer, he was able to observe her purse inside of the residence through a window. Officer Kassem quickly relayed t information to Sergeant Robert Kelch and Officer Troy Rickelmann and requested their assistance. Sergeant Kelch and Officer Rickelmann, with the help of Dispatcher Karen Stackpoole, began searching for family members of the female homeowner and ultimately were able to locate a family member who also was concemed after not hearing from her for a couple days. The relative provided officers with the entry code to the homeowner's garage. Officer Kassem, along with Officer Rickelmann and Sergeant Kelch made entry into the garage in an attempt to locate the homeowner. The Officers located the victim in the garage of the residence and advised via radio that she was “breathing, but in need of immediate medical attention.” They requested Professionalism; Quality Service; Community Partnerships the assistance of the Huron Township Fire Department and Huron Valley Ambulance. The victim had significant injuries to the lower portion of her body and was showing signs of hypothermia. It appeared as iff she had been there longer than 24 hours. Officers began administering first aid to the victim and retrieved blankets from their patrol vehicle and used them to try and keep the vietim warm until emergency medical personnel could arrive to the scene. Officer Kassem, I must say that I have never been as proud of an officer as Tam of you today. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines the word hero as “a person admired for achievements and noble qualities and one who shows great courage.” Tcan tell you without hesitation that to this victim, her family, and to this community, your actions were heroic. Without your actions, efforts, and quick response, itis likely that we would have lost the life of one of our valued residents. I will not soon forget the sense of pride that I had for being part of the Huron Township Public Safety Team as Sergeant Kelch briefed me on this incident shortly after it occurred. His pride was evident as well as he described to me the excitement in the voices of Officer Kassem and Officer Rickelmann as they stated to him, “This is why I became a police officer” ‘The residents of this wonderful and supportive community deserve to know that when then lay down to sleep each and every night, they and their families are well protected; you have reinforced that fecling of safety and security. Each of your efforts that night is a direct reflection of the great work being done by our entire public safety team. It is important for you to know that your good deeds and excellent work are not going unnoticed. It is with great pride that I commend each of you for your bravery, teamwork, and professional commitment to the safety of our residents and this community that each of ‘you proudly serve, Please accept my congratulations and thanks for a job well done!
