platform, start the elevator tipping device to push the elevator to the triples where is to
be connected;
(4)Well workers will make up the triples into the elevator, and take the elevator
tipping device back to the well head;
(5)Drilling machine operator put the triples into the box threads of the drilling rod;
(6)Put the top drive drilling down slowly to put the upper side of the triples into the
guiding shoe and make up with the saver sub of top drive drilling system;
(7)Make up by Motor (e. g. Single Drilling)
(8)Lock tight by Top drive according to IX-2.
(9)Pull the slip out, start circulate mud, open IBOP, continue drilling.
Shut off the mud pump to lower down the pressure in tube to safe
pressure before stop drilling and breaking out, then close the IBOP.
Before single drilling, open IBOP, then start mud pump.
XII. Backreaming
During the course of pulling out, if the drilling devices are blocked, connect them with
the top drive drilling system at once, and circulate mud. Lift the drilling and
backreaming at the same time to avoid drill rod being clamped and key box being
reamed though.
Procedures of backreaming are as follows:
(1) Circulating mud and rotating to pull the drilling devices out until one triple is lifted
outside;
(2) Stop mud circulating and rotating, set the slip;
(3) Unlink the connection thread with the top drive drilling system on the triples, and
unlink the connection on the surface of drilling floor by hydraulic tong;
(4) Pull out the triples, arrange the triples into the drilling rod box;
(5) Set the top drive drilling system down to of drilling floor.
(6) Lift the drilling rod to pull the slip out. Set the drilling rod down to the head of the
well and set it onto the slip.
(7) Loosen the elevator, operate the【Link incline】 to slope it backward a little and
deviate it from the drilling rod. Lift the traveling crane to the kelly board. Repeat the
above operations.

Tripping Sequence: Out of Hole
1. Suitable elevators should be installed on the Top Drive.
2. Latch the elevators around the drill string and hoist (opening slips) to the racking board
elevation. The link tilt can be used to latch the elevators.
3. Set the slips while gently lowering the string until all weight of the drill string is in the
slips.
4. Break out the stand in the elevators from the string using the floor handling tools.
5. Hoist to “un-stab” the stand.
6. Extend the link tilt.
7. Position the pin end of the stand at the pipe set-back and lower the Top Drive to set the
stand down.
8. The derrickman opens the elevator and racks back the top end of the stand. The link tilt
reduces the required derrickman effort.
9. Lower the Top Drive. Ensure the pipe is clear of the Top Drive. Retract the link tilt in
preparation to latch the elevators onto the next stand.
10. Repeat the procedure.
NOTE: If tight hole is encountered at any time, set the pipe in the
slips and lower the Top Drive, spin in and make-up to the
connection on top of the pipe. Use the Back-Up Wrench on
the pipe tool joint if there is insufficient string weight to
restrain the torque in the slips. Initiate circulation and
rotation. Ream as required.
11. After a stand is reamed out, set the slips. Close the Back-Up Wrench on the drill pipe
and reverse Torque to break the connection. Break the stand at the floor and rack back
using the elevators.

OPERATIONS GUIDE TRIPPING OPERATIONS
REAMING OPERATIONS
How to Use the Top Drive to Ream During Trip Out Operations
• Ream: t<;> enlarge the diameter of a wellbore.
Reaming is performed whenever a tight spot is encountered during trip out operations. This
most commonly occurs when a collar encounters an obstruction or a narrowing in the open
hole.
If using the top drive to perform tripping operations, the drill pipe and bottom hole assembly
(BRA-tools and collars) will be suspended fr9m the top drive elevator. In order to ream, the
top drive must be connected to the drill string and the tight section must be worked until the
drill string can pass freely. To continue tripping operations after the obstruction is cleared,
the top drive must be disconnected and the drill string suspended from the elevator.
' . Use the following procedure if encountering a tight spot while tripping out (the weight
indicator displays more than the weight of the drill string), or if the drill string is stuck:
1. Lower the top drive and the drill string:
Note: Ensure that the uppermost drill pipe connection is in position to
connect to the top drive.
2. Set the slips.
3. Lower the top drive until the saver sub contacts the drill pipe.
4. Position the grabber to close on the box connection of the drill pipe.
5. Set the GRABBER switch to 'CLOSE'.
Note: Ensure the grabber closes on the box connection of the drill pipe.
6. Set the MODE switch to 'CONN'.
7. Set the QUILL-REV/FWD switch to 'FWD'.
8. Lower the top drive into the connection.
Note: Do not allow the top drive weight to sit on the threaded connection.
9. Fully engage the connection between the saver sub and the drill pipe.
10. When the torque reaches the required tor.que for the connection, set the
QUILL-REV /FWD switch to neutral.
11. Set the GRABBER switch to 'OPEN'.
12. Set the mudsaver VALVE switch to 'OPEN'.
13. Start thy mud pumps.
14. Set the MODE switch to 'DRILL LO'.
15. Set the QUILL-REV /FWD switch to 'FWD'.
16. Set the speed to the required values.
Note: Recommended speed is 30 to 40 rpm.
17. Hpist the top drive until the tight spot is encountered.

TRIPPING OPERATIONS OPERATIONS GUIDE
18. Raise and lower the top drive several times (or until the hole is clean) while
circulating the mud.
Note: It is advisable to trip out one or two stands with the top drive connected
to the drill string.
19. When reaming operations are complete, set the QUILL-REV /FWD switch to
select neutral.
20. Hoist the top drive to the proper position for disconnecting it from the drill pipe.
21. Set th~ slips.
22. Tum off the rig mud pumps.
23. Set the mudsaver VALVE switch to ' CLOSE'.
24. Disconnect the drill pipe from the top drive. See "How to Break the Top Drive/
Drill Pipe Connection" on page 38 for more information.
25. Continue with standard procedures for trip out operations.
· How to Use the Top Drive to Ream to ~ottom During Trip In
Operations
• Ream: to enlarge the diameter of a wellbore.
Reaming to bottom is performed whenever a tight spot is encountered during trip in
operations.
If using the top drive for tripping operations, the drill pipe or BHA (tools and collars) will be
suspended from the top drive elevator. In order to ream ahead, the top drive must be connected
to the drill string and the tight section must be worked until the drill string can pass freely. To
continue tripping operations after the obstruction is cleared, the top drive must be discon-
nected and the drill string suspended from the elevator.
Use the following procedure if encountering a tight spot during trip in operations (weight
comes off the weight indicator).
1. Hoist the top drive to lift the bottom hole assembly (BHA) above the tight spot.
Note: Ensure that the uppermost drill pipe connection is in position to connect
to the top drive.
2. Set the slips.
3. Lower the top drive until the saver sub contacts the drill pipe.
4. Position the grabber to close on the box connection of the drill pipe.
5. Set the GRABBER switch to 'CLOSE'.
6. Set the MODE switch to 'CONN' .
7. Set the QUI.L L-REV/FWD switch to 'FWD'.
8. Rotate the top drive into the connection.
Note: Do not allow the top drive weight to sit on the threaded connection.
9. Fully engage the connection between the saver sub and the drill pipe.
10. When the required torque for the connection is attained, set the QUILL-REV I
FWD switch to neutral.
