First Sunday of Lent

Greetings of Peace. We are saddened this week by the ongoing gun violence that plagues our schools nationally.
There is a temptation to offer thoughts and prayer and stop there. Whether it is the gun issue or another issue, it is
specific, concrete policy proposals that will fix social ills. The courage to enact these proposals should be a fruit of
our prayer, rather than the prayer being an end in itself.

A Lenten Reflection, from Br. Daniel Murray, OFM

Who Are You at the Stations of the Cross?
Certain people stand out when we pray the Stations of the Cross during Lent. Who would each of us be?
Would we be Pilate, who so easily was able to betray Jesus, because he was afraid – afraid to alienate the crowd and afraid to
challenge the authorities?
Would we be Mary, who loved Jesus so dearly that she had to be present even though seeing him suffer hurt her so deeply?
Would we be the women of Jerusalem who came out perhaps just following the crowd but were terribly distraught to see him
suffer?
Would we be John who bravely followed Jesus to the cross when his friends had abandoned him, stood by Mary in her hour of
suffering, and took the sorrowing Mother into his home at the bidding of Jesus?
Would we be just one of the crowd who just came out to see a spectacle and were quick to see Jesus as just another criminal who
deserved to be mocked and abandoned. Just another faceless person!
Who would we be? Because we are people of faith, we like to think we would be right there at Jesus’ side.
The real answer lies in the way we recognize Jesus in the everyday, ordinary person we meet each day. “Just as you did it to the
least of my brothers or sisters, you did it to me.” - Jesus
