THE BOARDED WINDOW – SUMMARY
Murlock was a man of the frontier, lived in a log cabin that he’d built in an inmmense forest that
now is known as the great city of Cincinnati.
Murlock was one of the first people to arrive there, he appeared to be seventy years old, but he
was really fifty. His Little log house had a single door and just in front was a window that was
boarded up and nobody knew because it had been closed.
One day Murlock was found in his cabin, dead and the medical examiners couldn’t clarity the
causes of his death, so they was agreed that he died from natural causes and was buried near the
cabin, next to the burial place of his wife. She had died so long ago that almost nobody
remembered her existence.
My grandfather told me that one day Murlock returned to his cabin to discover that his wife was
delirious with fever and since there were no doctors or anyone more in miles and she was no
condition to be lef alone, so he tried to take care of her, but at the third day she died. When he
was sure she was dead, Murlock begans the duty of preparation for the burial and in the course of
this he made some mistakes and other things that he did correctly, soon after he had finished his
work, he sank a chair by the side of the table and laid his arms upon the table and dropped his
face into them, a moment later he heard to howl and the noise continued until Murlock looked up
in the darkness to see who-what had waked him?.
Suddenly the table shuddered and he heard the body of his wife being thrown from the table and
immediately took his rifle and fired without aiming, the shot illuminated the cabin for a moment
and he could see a panther dragging the corpse through the window. Then evreything was
darkness again and when he returned to consciousness it was already day. The body lay near the
window, the clothing was ruined, the hair in disorder, the throat was lacerated and between the
teeth was a piece of the animal’s ear.
