Research Instruments
The researchers will use interview as a tool of gathering or collecting data. In lexical
term, an interview is a formal conversation between the interviewer and interviewee wherein the
former will ask series of questions. There are two kinds of interview: structured interview and
unstructured interview. According to McLeod (2014), structured interview is also known as a
formal interview. In this kind of interview, the interviewer will ask questions in a standardized
order where they cannot ask further question beyond the given answers. On the contrary, he
stated that unstructured interview is usually referred to as an informal interview. The
interviewers can deviate from the set of questions and can change or add questions depending on
the answer of the respondent.
The researchers will be using both structured and unstructured interview. Since this
research aims to analyze the effectiveness of the resettlement program, it is of importance to
conduct a structured interview with the NHA, as the sole agency. The researchers will formulate
fixed set of questions that will be convenient for them. In interviewing informal settler families,
the researchers will use unstructured interview. As the beneficiaries of the program and main
respondents of the study, they are the ones who can assess the proper implementation of the
program by the services it offers. Given their situation that some of them do not have the
capacity to afford education, their answers cannot be anticipated. With that being said, the
researchers’ questions will depend on the respondent’s answer.
In conducting the interviews, the researchers will be writing down notes of the answers of
the respondents. The researchers will also use devices such as audio recorder, video recorder and
camera in order accurately document the answers of the respondents as well as to avoid
misinterpretations by just taking of notes. In the same manner, will make a journal where the
researchers will put therein their analysis of their surveillance in the respective resettlement sites
on day-to-day observation.
