Roy Sarkis – Activity 3 – March 4, 2018
Site layout is used to locate equipment, site offices, material laydown areas and entrances in order to
complete a construction project on schedule and in a safe manner. It is prepared by the general contractor
who seeks for a maximized site efficiency and productivity. Moreover, the site layout plan shows the
location of the crane and its controlling area. However, in the case of the considered project, the
contractor (owner) did not execute an official layout since the project is small and with no tower crane
used on site. Nonetheless, a roof mounted crane (shown in figure 2 below) is used to transport materials
from the ground floor to the upper floors and it is moved up every time a floor is finished.
The owner, Mr. Maarouf Al-Makouk, stated that he is very comfortable working with small construction
projects without any site layout plan since he is highly experienced. This project was even more particular
since he is the owner, his nephew is the engineer and they both live just across the street.
Based on data collected and site visits, I was able to establish the following layout plan (Figures 1 and 2
below). The key elements that were taken into account when creating the site layout were as follows:
• Material Storage: Being a small project, the area available for material storage and laydown is
respectively small. Therefore, few materials were ordered ahead of time especially that this project is
following a just in time philosophy. Mr. Al-Makouk explained that he is on good terms with all the suppliers
hence he is always sure that the material will always arrive on time and meet the requirements. Figure 1
shows the location of three material storage: rebars, wood, cement, sand and aggregates. However, these
materials are not available in ample quantities but they always keep a storage in case of rework or sudden
changes. Additionally, a locked room for equipment and tools is available next to the stairs to safely keep
them during the night.
• Access Points: The project was limited to two entrances. One of them, the main entrance, is used
for material delivery and removal on the construction waste. This entrance is only open when they are
expecting a delivery. The other is mainly used by the workers to access the site.
• Site office: A small office is constructed on site. This office is occupied owner and engineer who
are responsible for monitoring the work done by the foreman on site. Nevertheless, they rarely use it but
the workers have access to it to drink water.
• Water and Electricity: The electric supply is provided by one generator located near the electric
board whereas service water is provided by one tank next to the entrance. Moreover, there is a water
closet that is located near the elevator shaft on the ground floor, 4th and 9th floor.
As for the security of the site, it is fully covered by a fence (represented by a blue line in Figure 1) and 3
security cameras (represented by an "X" in Figure 1) covering the entire perimeter.
