Concrete Durability Evaluation

This document discusses testing concrete durability against chloride ion penetration. Two models of testing equipment are available: a 4-channel model for up to 4 specimens and an 8-channel model for up to 8 specimens. The test measures the electrical current passing through a concrete core or cylinder over time when one end is in a sodium chloride solution and the other in sodium hydroxide. A higher total charge indicates lower resistance to chloride ion penetration. Full water saturation of specimens is also required by the test standards and can be done with a separate vacuum saturation apparatus.

Concrete durability is negatively influenced


by chloride ion penetration. This test
method allows concrete to be evaluated in
terms of its chloride permeability characte-
ristics. The test is performed to monitor
the amount of electrical current passing
through concrete cores or cylinders. A po-
tential difference is maintained across the
ends of the specimen, one of which is the
negative end and is immersed in a sodium
chloride solution, the other (positive end)
in a sodium hydroxide solution. The total
charge passed, which is related to the Measuring technique:
resistance of the specimen to chloride ion
