The document discusses some of the ethical issues surrounding India's legalization of passive euthanasia and living wills in 2018, including questions around the difference between passive euthanasia and suicide, whether active euthanasia could also be legalized, implications for property disputes within families, the role of doctors in the decision making process, and how to handle decisions for mentally unstable or physically disabled patients. A group of 6 students - Arun Unni, Gaurav Pandey, Nimish Joshi, Rajit Das, Shalom Samraj, and Vinit Magar - will explore these issues.

Ethical issues in Legalization of Euthanasia

Legalisation of Euthanasia has always been a sensitive issue throughout the World especially
in India where even suicide is a legal offence. On 9 March 2018, Supreme Court of
India declared passive euthanasia permissible and also legalised living will. This has sparked
the debate of whether this law can be misused for legalised murder. In this project we like to answer
some important questions regarding this decision like: -

1. What is the fine line between passive Euthanasia and Suicide?

2. Can active Euthanasia be legalised?
3. In a country like India where transfer of ownership of property often causes dispute among
family members, what all implications will this decision have?
4. Should doctor be the sole decision maker in the process?
5. What if a patient is mentally unstable or Physically challenged (dumb and deaf)?
