Abstract
This mixed developmental research design with a descriptive method combined a
survey and an interview to develop instructional materials (teacher’s guide and learner’s
material) anchored on the assessment of the problems and challenges encountered by
Grade 2 teachers in teaching the English Subject. The study underwent two phases:
Phase One was the assessment of the problems and challenges encountered by Grade 2
teachers in teaching the English Subject as to Content, Teaching Strategies and
Facilitation of Learning. Findings revealed that the Content of the current instructional
materials used by Grade 2 teachers were neither appropriate and adequate nor
inappropriate and inadequate. Furthermore, it was revealed that the teaching strategies
employed by the teachers were appropriate. In terms of Facilitation of Learning, findings
showed that it was appropriate. Consequently, the problems and challenges
encountered by Grade 2 teachers in teaching the English Subject as narrated by the
informants who were interviewed revolved on inadequacy of instructional materials,
incongruence of the current curriculum guide and learner’s manual, and the need for
utilization of varied teaching strategies. Phase Two was the development of the
instructional materials (teacher’s guide and learner’s material) which included the stages
such as preparation, development, evaluation, try-out, refinement and the finalization.

the instructional materials. On the basis of these results, a teacher’s guide entitled
“Teaching English the SIMPLE Way” and a learner’s material entitled “Learning English
the SIMPLE Way” containing colorful illustrations, power point presentations,
downloaded videos, and varied activities were developed. The developed teacher’s guide
and learner’s material underwent face content validation by the pool of experts and by
the purposively selected teachers. The acceptability level of the instructional materials
was evaluated in terms of their (a) content, (b) format, (c) presentation and
organization, (d) evaluation instrument and (e) accuracy and up-to-datedness of
information. The instructional materials were rated by the pool of experts and teachers
as “appropriate” and “very appropriate” respectively. It was recommended to use the
teacher’s guide entitled “Teaching English the SIMPLE Way” and the learner’s material
entitled “Learning English the SIMPLE Way” in teaching English in Grade 2 as
supplements to the existing instructional materials provided by the Department of
Education.
