whole note/rest - the longest note value in western music (symbolized as an oval for the note and a
horizontal bar with a line across the bottom for the rest)
half note/rest - the 2nd longest note value in western music (symbolized by an oval with a vertical
stem for the note and a horizontal bar with a line across the top for a rest)
quarter note/rest - the 3rd longest note value in western music (symbolized by a solid oval with a
vertical stem for the note and a zig-zag with a "c" at the bottom for the rest)
eighth note/rest - the 4th longest note value in western music (symbolized by a solid oval with a
vertical stem and a flag for the note and a "7" for the rest) **2 eighth notes are often connected with
a beam across the top which replaces their respective flags**
16th note/rest - the 5th longest note value in western music (symbolized by a solid oval with a
vertical stem and 2 flags for the note, a "7" with an extra vertical line to the left for the rest) **16th
notes can be beamed like 8th notes in groups of 2 or 4**

measure - a grouping of notes usually separated with vertical barlines
barlines - a vertical line that divides notes into groupings (measures)
