Cable Connection & Sealing of Sacrificial Anodes

This document provides the procedure for connecting tail cables to sacrificial anodes and sealing the connections for cathodic protection. The key steps include measuring and cutting the cable, stripping the insulation, soldering the cable to the anode core, applying a protective PVC pipe and sealing the joint with epoxy resin. Proper workmanship and quality control measures such as continuity testing must be followed to ensure leak-proof connections.

CABLE CONNECTION & SEALING OF SACRIFICIAL ANODES

1.0 PURPOSE

To describe the procedure for the tail cable connection and sealing of Sacrificial Anodes and
provide adequate quality assurance / control of workmanship and inspection at site.

2.0 SCOPE

This procedure covers the cable connection and sealing of Sacrificial Anodes for Cathodic
Protection System as per EIL technical specifications.

3.0 MATERIALS & EQUIPMENTS

 Equipments : Calibrated portable multi meter, Standard Copper - Copper Sulphate

Reference Cell, Blow lamp / Stove, Tool kit, Continuity tester, Crimping tools
and knife, etc.
 Materials : Anode, Epoxy & Hardener, Eutectic Solder, Cable, Lugs, Measuring tape and
Tool box, etc.

CABLE CONNECTION & SEALING OF SACRIFICIAL ANODES

5.0 PROCEDURE

 Measure & cut the cable for required length.

 Remove the insulation of tail cable and polish the conductor strands with emery paper for
soldering with anode core.

 Rough the surface of insert and Put the strand on insert surface for silver soldering.

 Heat the copper soldering rod by using blow lamp.

 Put the heated copper rod on insert and apply flux with clean surface where soldering is to
be carried out.

 Cable to anode connection shall be done as per EIL standard by melting the eutectic rod
with the help of heated copper rod and check the continuity between anode & tail cable.

 Put PVC pipe on connection as per Approved Drawing.

 Apply M - seal around the PVC pipe to prevent leakage of encapsulation materials.

 Pour mixture of epoxy & hardener inside the PVC pipe and the total joint to be
encapsulated.

6.0 PRECAUTIONS

 Anode tail cable should be of sufficient length to reach up to test station without any joint.

 Care should be taken during heat up, cable encapsulation shall not be heated and burned.

 Do not use tail cable for lifting anode assembly.

 All connection to be check for proper tightening.

CABLE CONNECTION & SEALING OF SACRIFICIAL ANODES

 Cable armour shall not have electrical connection with anode. Care shall be taken and the
same shall be ensured before encapsulating by the mixture of epoxy and hardener.

 One set of Drawing / Documents should be kept by site supervisor at work place.

7.0 TEST REPORTS

Record and document all inspection results obtained in the standard inspection report formats
attached below.
