EE 614 Solid State Microwave Devices and Applications: Assignment-2

This document outlines 7 problems related to solid state microwave devices and applications for an assignment. The problems involve: 1) Finding the voltage across a load resistor using ABCD parameters 2) Designing an unequal power divider 3) Designing a directional coupler with specified coupling 4) Designing a hybrid coupler with unequal power division and writing S-parameters for a circuit 5) Calculating output powers for a hybrid coupler circuit 6) Finding S-parameters of a rat race coupler 7) Calculating output powers for a 4-port circuit. Students are to submit their solutions by a specified due date for a total of 20 marks.

Assignment-2
To be submitted on or before February 8, 2018 Total Marks: 20

1. For the circuit shown in Fig.1, find the voltage VL across the load resistor using ABCD parameters. (3)

Fig. 1
2. Design a 2-way unequal quarter wave power divider on substrate having r =2.2 and h =0.8 mm at 1800 MHz
such that powers at output ports are 1/5 and 4/5 of input power. Assume Z o = 50 Ω. (3)
3. A coupled line directional coupler is designed at 900 MHz for coupling of 30 dB. If the coupler is to be made
using microstrip lines with substrate r = 9.6 and h = 0.8 mm, find the necessary line widths and separation
(assume I/O impedance = 50 Ω). (2)
4. (a) Design a 2-branch hybrid coupler for unequal power division of 1/8 and 7/8 at the two output ports assuming
port1 as input port?
(b) For the circuit shown in Fig.2, if power is fed using port 2, write all the s-parameters for this case. (4)

Fig.2
5. For the circuit shown in Fig. 3, the hybrid coupler is a 3dB 2 branch line coupler. What will be the output power
at Ports 2 and 3 if port 1 is fed with an input power of 10W. Assume Zo = 50 Ω. (3)

6. Find S-parameters of rat race coupler using even and odd mode ABCD parameters. (2)
7. For the circuit shown below, all the input and output ports are matched with 50 Ω and have line length of λ. If
Ports 1 and 2 are fed with power 10 W, what will be the output power at all the other ports? (3)
