INTRODUCTION TO MARRIOTT GROUP

Marriott International, Inc. (NASDAQ: MAR) is an


American multinational diversified hospitality company that manages and
franchises a broad portfolio of hotels and related lodging facilities. Founded by J.
Willard Marriott, the company is now led by his son, Executive Chairman Bill
Marriott, and President and Chief Executive Officer Arne Sorenson.

Marriott International is headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland, in the Washington,


DC metropolitan area. It has more than 6,000 properties in 122 countries and
territories around the world over 1.2 million rooms (as of September 2017), and
additional 195,000 rooms in the development pipeline. In 2017, Marriott was
ranked #33 on Fortune's "100 Best Companies to Work For" list, its twentieth
appearance on the list.

FOUNDERS OF MARRIOTT

J. Willard Marriott

In 1927, J. Willard Marriott opened the nine-stool root beer stand that grew into the
Hot Shoppes Restaurant chain and evolved into today’s Marriott International hotel
company. For the next 58 years, he built the Marriott brand on a foundation of
guiding principles that remain embedded in the company’s culture today

Alice Sheets Marriott

Alice Sheets was J. Willard Marriott’s essential partner in both life and business.
She had a hands-on role in helping the Marriott company grow, and her volunteer
spirit is celebrated each year through the Alice S. Marriott Award for Community
Service.

Bill Marriott

Raised in the family business, J.W. “Bill” Marriott, Jr. developed an early passion
for hospitality. In his more than 50 years at the company’s helm, he built Marriott

into a global lodging company with more than 4,300 properties in more than 80
countries.

HISTORY

Founding and early years

Marriott was founded by John Willard Marriott in 1927 when he and his
wife, Alice Sheets Marriott, opened a root beer stand in Washington, D.C. As
a Mormon missionary in the humid summers in Washington, D.C, Marriott was
convinced that what residents of the city needed was a place to get a cool drink.

The Marriotts later expanded their enterprise into a chain of Hot Shoppes
restaurants and the company went public in 1953 as Hot Shoppes, Inc.

The company opened its first hotel, the Twin Bridges Marriott Motor Hotel,
in Arlington, Virginia, in 1957. Their second hotel, the Key Bridge Marriott in
the Rosslyn neighborhood of the same city, is Marriott International’s longest
continuously operating hotel, and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2009. Their
son, J.W. (Bill) Marriott, Jr., led the company to spectacular worldwide growth
during his more than 50-year career. In March 2012, at age 80, he turned the CEO
responsibilities over to Arne Sorenson, while he assumed the title of Executive
Chairman.

Hot Shoppes, Inc. was renamed the Marriott Corporation in 1967.

The company opened two theme parks in 1976. One Marriott's Great America was
located outside Chicago, the other Marriott's Great America was located outside
San Francisco. Marriott sold both properties in 1984.

OPERATIONS

Marriott is the first hotel chain to serve food that is completely free of trans fats at
all of its North American properties.

The hotel is noted for providing copies of the Book of Mormon in addition to the
Holy Bible in its rooms

INFORMATION ABOUT PUNE

Pune is the 8th largest metropolis in India. It is in the Indian state of Maharashtra.
The city is famous for the great Maratha king Shivaji Maharaj. The game
of badminton was invented there in the 19th century. It is also the birthplace of
spiritual teacher Meher Baba. Mula and Mutha are the two rivers that flow through
the city. It has also been referred to as the "Queen of the Deccan”, "Oxford of the
East", Detroit of India" by some. It has a major Information Technology (IT)
center. This city is managed by the Pune Municipal Council (PMC). Pune is a city
of knowledge and often known as the Oxford of the east. In Marathi, it is known
as Vidyeche maherghar which means, the hometown of education. Till 2015, the
population of Pune was 8,242,142.

The name Pune comes from the Sanskrit word - Puṇyanagara. It means "city
of virtue" Pune is known for its educational facilities, having more than hundred

educational institutes and nine universities. Pune has well-established glass, sugar
and metal forging industries since the 1950's. Pune is also known as the "Oxford of
the East."Pune was once the centre of power for the Maratha Empire. It is known
to have existed as a town since 847 AD. Pune was the first capital of Shivaji
Maharaj.

It is the cultural capital of Maharashtra. There are many historic places like
Shaniwar Wada, Lal Mahal and many museums like the Aga Khan Palace, Raja
Kelkar Museum, National War museum, etc.

The climate of Pune is suitable to reside in, hence a large number of people settle
here. Today, Pune has many complexes, shopping malls and multiplexes but I
would never forget places like Tulsi Baug, Kesari Wada, etc. There are many
research centers present in Pune.

Students not only from other cities and States come here to study, but international
students from various countries are also found here. There are many clubs for
different sports activities in this city. The main attraction of the city is the Ganesh
festival which is celebrated with great joy, this is because the people of this city are
co-operative..

INFORMATION OF SHANIWAR WADA


Shaniwar Wada was built in 1736. The main entrance to this place is through iron
spiked gate. The main gate is also known as a symbol logo of the Pune. The
Shaniwar Wada was built by the “Peshwa”

Ideally located amidst the centre of the city and 15 minutes from the airport,

INFORMATION OF AGA KHAN PALACE


The Aga Khan Palace was built by Sultan Muhammad Shah Aga Khan III in Pune,
India. Built in 1892, it is one of the biggest landmarks in Indian history. The palace
was an act of charity by the Sultan who wanted to help the poor in the
neighbouring areas of Pune, who were drastically hit by famine.

Pune university building at Ganeshkhind road was ones the official residence of the
governor of Mumbai residency during the fierce annual monsoon of the coasts. A

Shreemant Dagdusheth Halwai Ganapati Temple in Pune is dedicated to the Hindu

of Maharashtra who visit during the annual ten-day Ganeshotsav festival

Pune. With 199 suites located in what was earlier an Oakwood property, the

It is an italian live kitchen


It is headed by Italian CHEF JACOPO AVIGO
It is famous for its Italian food

Bistro, the Italian flagship at Marriott Suites Pune, has now been
replaced by Sorriso with Brescian Chef Jacopo Avigo taking
over the mantle of the kitchen. While the minimalist and soothing decor of the inside seating area
remains untouched, the al fresco area has been tweaked and is now an enclosed space with a
generous dash of greenery and a bar at the far end. The new menu boasts of traditional Italian
dishes, some of which have been given a modern twist by Chef Avigo.

Handmade gourmet pizza -

Our tasting kicked-off with Handmade Gourmet Pizzas -


Funghi and Gamberi. The dough for these pies is double
fermented resulting in bread that's crisp and light. The
regular tomato sauce base gives way to mushroom cream
topped with burrata and truffle oil in the former while the
Gamberi had a slightly sweet pumpkin cream base plonked
with prawns and rocket leaves. Both excellent, but
considerably steeper than the regular pizzas listed on the
menu.

Crema Di Granchio -

a clear crab bisque with shredded crab meat speckled


with carrots and celery, was redolent with aroma of the
crustacean and was perfect to slurp on a cool monsoon
evening. Cozze Ripene is a classic dish of stuffed
mussels where the mollusks are poached in white wine
and parsley to open the shells after which the flesh is
chopped and cooked in bechamel sauce and then
stuffed back in the shells, coated with bread crumbs
and deep fried. Though the accompanying garlic mayo
is pleasantly sharp, I'd have preferred a spunkier
tomato or red pepper dip instead to combat the
creaminess of the stuffing.

The Buffalo Tonnato -

The buffalo tonnato was quite easily the standout dish


for me. Cold slices of medium done buffalo
tenderloin, with a blushing pink centre, when eaten
with a creamy tuna sauce and peppery rocket leaves
results in a revelation of a dish that must be tried when
at Sorriso. The Estiva - a salad of smoked salmon,
boiled eggs, romaine lettuce in a lemon dressing - is
refreshing, but the overall impact is a tad
underwhelming.

Casoncelli Bresciani -

Casoncelli bresciani , pasta stuffed generously with


pork mince and pancetta and tossed in a decadent
butter-sage sauce was another favourite of the evening;
while it's not a deal-breaker, the pasta could've been a
little thinner.

Ossubuco Alla -

Sorriso's Ossubuco Alla Milanese swaps the traditional


veal shanks for lamb shanks but the meat is perfectly
pliant and the delicate flavours of the ossobuco
complement the saffron risotto well..
