Vessel Reinforcement Design Guide

This document provides information and instructions for using a method to calculate the reinforcement required for openings in cylindrical shells of single-walled pressure vessels. It describes inputting variables like design pressure, temperatures, material properties, shell and nozzle dimensions, and angle of the plane. The method checks for sufficient reinforcement of existing openings and allows modifying parameters to re-check the design. It outputs results like required wall thicknesses, reinforcement areas, weld sizes, and maximum projection of nozzles beyond the vessel wall.

REINFORCEMENT REQUIRED FOR OPENINGS*

(single-walled vessels)
(REINFORCING PADS)

With this method, you may design for internal pressure:

· Reinforcement required for openings in cylindrical shells.

You may also obtain :

Wall Thicknesses required (Shell and Nozzle)

Area of Reinforcement required
Area of Reinforcement available
Cross-sectional area of various welds available for reinforcement
Cross-sectional area of material added as reinforcement
Total Area Available
Size of reinforcing pad (if required)
Size of fillet welds (Inside, outside and reinforcing pad fillet-if required)
Maximum Nozzle distance projects beyond the inner surface of the vessel wall, less Corrosion allowance.

Furthermore you will be able to:

· Check your existing openings for different conditions .

· Check your reinforcement of openings design modifying some one of the parameters as follows:

· Design Pressure (internal).

· Design Temperature.
· Thicknesses (Vessel and Nozzle).
· Diameters (Vessel and Nozzle).
· Allowable stresses (Materials:Vessel, Nozzle and Pad).
· Joint Efficiency.
· Angle of plane with longitudinal axis.

NOTE : This method applies to all openings other than:

Openings in flat heads.

Openings designed as reducer sections.
Large head openings.
Tube holes with ligaments among them.
Large Openings in cylindrical shells.
