 When and where did/does the person live?


Kim Peek, the real “Rain Man”, calendar calculations, memory.
Kim Peek was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, United States (November
11, 1951).
He died in Murray, Utah, Estados Unidos (December 19, 2009).
 What are the person’s special abilities?
He had an exceptional memory so he was called “megasavant”.Also,he
had a calendary of 10 000 years in his mind.In addition,he was different
from other savants because he could interact to other
people.Otherwise,he could remain the 98 percent of all the books which
he read.And finally,he didn’t have musical abilities but he could play what
he listen in the piano.
 When or how did he or she acquire these abilities?
He has this abilities since he was born although he should develop them
during his life. Although he doesn’t understand what he read he notice
that he could remaind everything.
 Does the person also have disabilities? If so, what are they?
Yes, he has.He couldn’t do the basic activities.Also,he couldn’t
understand the things that he reamind.

2. VOCABULARY LOG
● Interaction: An occasion when two or more people or things
communicate with or react to each other.
Examples:
There’s not enough interaction between the management and
the workers.
Newton studied the interaction between our planet and the
universo.
● Compensate: To provide something good or useful in place of
something or to make someone feel better about something that
has failed or been lost or missed.
Examples:
I took her swimming to compensate for having missed out on the
cinema.
My mother gave me money to compensate for forgetting my
birthday.
● Predictable: happening or behaving in a way that you expect;
not unusual or interesting.
Examples:
The results were predictable.
The end of the movie was predictable.
● Transform: to change something completely, usually to improve it.
Examples:
You have transformed this house!
My grandparents gave me a lot of money to transform my
bedroom.
● Savant: a person with a
high level of knowledge or skill, especially someone who is
less able in other ways.
Examples:
There are musical savants who are very awkward physically - until
they sit at the piano.
There are physician savants who are awkward Reading until they
solve a math problem.
● Anxious: worried and nervous.
Examples:
My mother always gets a bit anxious if we don't arrive when we
say we will.
When I applied to the university I felt anxious.
● Estimate: to guess or calculate the cost, size, value, etc. of
something.
Examples:
Government sources estimate a long-
term 50 percent increase in rail fares.
The president estimates that our economy develoment will
increase 7 percent at the end of this year.
● Benefit: a helpful or good effect, or something intended to help.
Examples:
The discovery of oil brought many benefits to the town.
Participate in volunteering gives benefits to your resumé.
● Image: a picture in your mind or an idea of how someone or
something is.
Example:
I have an image in my mind of how I want the garden to be.
I have an image about my future house.
● Retain: to keep or continue to have something.
Example:
He managed to retain his dignity throughout the performance.
I reatin the ability to solve math problems fast.

He was born in Milan, Ohio, United States (February 11, 1847).
When he was 19 years old he live in Lousville, Kentucky.
When he was 21 years old he worked for Western Union.
He died in West Orange, New Jersey, United States (October 18, 1931)
 What is/was the person famous for?
He was considered the most importan inventor in the United States.
 What did this person achieve?
He developed many devices like light bulb, movie camera and phonograph.
He registered 1093 patents. In 1880 he associated with J. P. Morgan to found
the Edison Electric. After J. P. Morgan would take his actions to create General
Electric.In 1897, Edison will begin the so-called "patent war" with the Lumière
brothers regarding the invention of the first film machine.

 What obstacle did this person have to overcome? How did he or she
overcome them?
He had problems in the school so his mother decided to teach him in this
house. In his house he learned more tan the people in the school.In addition, he
had hearing problems.
 What personal characteristics helped this person overcome his or her
obstacles?
He was so responsable because he had to study alone. Also, he was organized
because he has to study and help his mother in the house at the same time. In
addition, he could accustom to hear with awkwardnes.

Thomas Edison was considered the most important inventor in the United

Examples:
She felt a great sense of pride as she watched him accept the award.
My grandmother felt a great sense of pride When I enter to the university.
 Paradise:a place or condition of great happiness where everything is
exactly as you would like it to be.
Examples:
His idea of paradise is to spend the day lying on the beach.
My cousin’s paradise is to sleep all the day and watch tv all the night.
 Mortified:very embarrassed.
Example:
She was absolutely mortified to hear her son swearing at the teacher.
I felt mortified to fail my English exam.
 Misery:great unhappiness
Examples:
We have witnessed the most appalling scenes of human misery.
She was worn down by the misery of prision life.
 Inquisitive:wanting to discover as much as you can about things,
sometimes in a way that annoys people.
Examples:
She could see inquisitive faces looking out from the windows next door.
My friend Maria is an inquisitive person.
 Defeat:to win against someone in a fight, war, or competition.
Examples:
Napoleon was defeated by the Duke of Wellington at the battle of
Waterloo.
Goliat was defeated by David according to the bible.
 Accountable:Someone who is accountable is completely responsible for
what they do and must be able to give a satisfactory reason for it.
Examples:
She is accountable only to the managing director.
The general manager is accountable of the economic development of the
company.
 Expectation:the feeling that good things are going to happen in the
future.
Examples:
The holiday lived up to all our expectations.
The expectation of all the peruvians is that our new president is going to
solve the national problems.
 Disability:an illness, injury, or condition that makes it difficult for someone
to do the things that other people do.
Examples:
She is deaf, but refuses to let her disability prevent her from doing what
she wants to do.
Although Stephen Hawking had a disability, he became an important
scientific.
I. UNIT PROJECT

Depressing. Disastrous. Die.These three words come to mind when


listening cancer. However , my uncle could survive with his disease
because he´s a person with an especial characteristic “he is always
happy”. Although some people are skeptical about the idea of mind-
body interaction, I know that the mind is more powerful tan the body.
The I know that the positive emotions produce positive chemical
change for one main reason.

Three years ago my uncle was diagnosed as having cancer and the
doctor said that “he´ll died in three months” but he was wrong my
uncle overcome this desease for his personality. For example,
although the doctor diagnized with cancer he continued with a bid
smile in his face. All in my family couldn’t understand why my uncle
was happy but one day he says if I feel good, I´ll be good and he was
right.

To conclude, I don’t know the reason bu tour mind has a powerful that
could afect us in a positive way and it could help us to overcome
diseases.

to develop or succeed.
Examples:
She has a lot of potential as a writer.
My sister has the potential to be an engineer.
 Revolutionize: to completely change something so that it is
much better.
Examples:
Newton’s discoveries revolutionized physics.
Facebook revolutionize the communication.
 Consult: to go to a person or book to get information or advice.
Examples:
For more information, consult your travel agent.
Why didn’t you consult me about this?
 Environment: the situation that you live or work in, and how
it changes how you feel.
Examples:
The new road may cause damage to the environment.
We are working in a very competitive environment.
 Link: a connection between two people, things, or ideas
Examples:
There’s a direct link between smoking and cancer.
Their links with Britain are still strong.
 Realiable: able to be trusted or believed.
Examples:
I buy a reliable car

 Skeptical: doubting that something is true or useful.
Examples:
Scientists remain sceptical about astrology.
She was sceptical of the new arrangement.
 Conventional: traditional and ordinary.
Examples:
My sister weared a conventional clothing.
I like to eat conventional food.
