2. (a) Field tests were carried out on a chilling system to find out the energy 10
performance ratios. The measurements data are as under:
Temperature of the refrigerant entering the evaporator is – 20C. Temperature
of the refrigerant leaving the evaporator is -50C. Flow rate of refrigerant is
15000Kgs/hr. Specific heat of the refrigerant is 2.3Kcal/Kg0C. Current input
into compressor is 70A. Voltage input measured is 415 V and Power
factor is 0.9. Find out the following :
(i) Net refrigeration capacity.
(ii) Kw/ton rating.
(iii) Coeffient of performance (COP).
(iv) Energy Efficiency ratio.(EER).

(b) Explain the environmental aspects of Electrical energy generation. 10

Answer any Five of the following eight questions

3. a) What are the advantages of the solar water heater? 6

b) Explain solar spectrum and write a short note on “Total clear sky isolation on a 8
collecting surface”

4. a) How does shading impacts on I-V curves of a PV module and the role of 8
bypass diode and blocking diode.

b) Explain from cell to module and from module to array (for solar energy 6
system).

5. a) What is meant by “Solar window”? 4

b) The following parameters were observed during the testing of a cooling 10


water pump: Discharge pressure of pump : 5.0 Kg/cm2 , Flow rate of
water: 900 m3/hr., Suction head : 2 metre below the pump centerline.
Height of cooling tower: 5 metre, Motor efficiency: 90%. , Density of
water: 1000 Kg/m3, Current drawn by pump motor : 260 amps., Voltage
measured : 415volts., Power factor measured: 0.9 Calculate the
following:
(i) Hydraulic power.
(ii) Pump Efficiency.
