Multiple Choices. Direction: WRITE THE WORD/S OF the correct answer.

A. Read the description of Jose’s science investigatory below. Then Answer the questions that
follow. Encircle only the letter of the correct answer.
Jose investigated the fungicidal ability of akapulko leaf extracts to kill the fungus that causes athlete’s foot. To
extract the antifungal chemicals in the akapulko leaves, he used different liquids such as distilled water, ethyl alcohol,
coconut oil, and acetone. His investigations revealed that the fungicidal ability of the akapulko leaves was most
effective with the use of coconut oil as extracting liquid. He therefore recommended the use of the akapulko leaves-
coconut oil mixture for those suffering from athletes foot. He also recommended that more study be done on other
disease-causing fungi.
Jose further improved on his science investigatory project by quantifying the effectiveness of akapulko leaves
in inhabiting the growth of the fungus that causes athlete’s foot. With the help of a microbiologist, he performed the
agar disc diffusion method, a laboratory procedure for determining the effectiveness of an extract from the akapulko
leaves to kill fungus. He did several trials to determine the extract’s effectiveness by measuring the diameter of the
zone of inhibition of extracts against the fungus. (The zone of inhibition is a clear round zone that can be observed in
fungus-containing agar plate) The clear zone on the agar plate showed that the fungus was not resistant to the akapulko
extract.
Jose took several measurements (in millimeter) of the diameter of the zone of inhibition. Then he compared the
numerical data of the control set up consisting of coconut oil as the only inhibitory material.

1. Which is the independent variable in the investigation? (athlete’s foot / akapulko leaf extract /
different liquid / antifungal chemicals)
2. Which is the dependent variable? (Akapulko leaves / Antifungal Chemicals / Different liquids /
Fungicidal ability)
3. If you were to improve on Jose’s investigation to determine which of the liquids he used can
best extract the antifungal chemicals, on which aspect will you concentrate?
 The use of additional extracting liquids
 The use of a control setup that will include the antifungal effect of the liquid.
 The use of different disease-causing fungi
 The use of other parts of the akapulko plant in the experimental setup.
4. Which do you think is the hypothesis in Jose’s investigation?
 Akapulko leaves contain chemicals that can kill the fungi that cause athlete’s foot.
 The antifungal chemicals in akapulko leaves can best be extracted with the use of
distilled water.
 A control set up is prepared as basis for comparison for the experimental setup.
 Different liquids can be used to determine the best liquid for extracting antifungal
chemicals.
5. Which constant was controlled in Jose’s experiment so that it would not affect the predicted
effect of the independent variable?

 Same amount of extracting liquid.
 Same experimental procedure for testing the antifungal effects of the leaf-liquid mixture.
 All of the above.
6. Which served as the experimental units in Jose’s investigation? (Athlete’s foot / Akapulko
leaves / Fungi causing athlete’s foot / Antifungal effects of Akapulko leaves)
7. When is a fair test observed in an investigatory process?
 When two or more independent variables are studied at the same time for their effects
on the experimental units.
 When only one independent variable is studied for its effects on a number of similar
experimental units.
 When only one independent variable is studied for its effect on a number of different
kinds of experimental units.
 When one dependent variable is analyzed based on the influence of a single factor.
8. Which reason explains why a control set up is necessary in a science investigation?
 The control set up is used as basis for comparing the results of the experimental setup.
 The control setup serves to validate or prove whether the changes in the experimental
units are brought about by the influence of the independent variable only.
 The control setup is used to assess experimental effects.
 All of the above
9. What do you think did Jose find out about akapulko from his science investigation?
 Akapulko leaves can be used to treat athlete’s foot.
 It is best to use liquids to extract the antifungal chemicals.
 The fungicidal ability of akapulko leaves is used in combination with coconut oil.
 Akapulko leaves can be used to treat other diseases caused by fungi.
10. What recommendations did Jose give based on his investigation?
 Persons suffering from athlete’s foot can use the akapulko leaves-coconut oil mixture to
treat the condition.
 The study should be extended to include other disease-causing fungi.
 The akapulko leaves-coconut oil mixture can be used to make a topical ointment.
 Tests should be done to determine the antibacterial property of the akapulko leavrs-
coconut oil mixture.
11. Take into account the second part of Jose’s experiment. Why do you think did he decide to
take numerical measurements of the antifungal properties of akapulko leaves?
