1. Mechanical Engineering Students Association (MESA)

MESA is the association of all the Students of mechanical Engineering Department of

Institute of Technology, Nirma University. MESA is one of the oldest student association of
the institute established in year 1998. The basic aim of the association is to establish,
promote, and maintain an active interest in the mechanical engineering concepts,
fundamentals and activities; to foster a fraternal friendship among the members, to plan and
carry out workshops, activities (technical and non-technical), industrial visits, technical
competitions, extension activities and other activities of interest to the members for their
overall development.
Following is the list of office bearers of MESA for last three academic years.

4. ROBOCON
Robocon is an International Robotic Contest organized by ABU (Asia-Pecific Broadcasting
Union) every year. ABU is a union of national broadcasters of various countries of Asia-
Pecific region. Each year, one of the member countries take an opportunity to host the
Robocon International Event and release the Theme (problem definition) for the competition
one year ahead. Based on the declared theme, every country organizes the National Level
competition and the National Winners of each country compete at International Event at the
Host country.

The contest aims to create friendship among young people with similar interests who will
lead their countries in the 21st century, as well as help advance engineering and broadcasting
technologies in the region. Being a national broadcaster of India and member of ABU,
Doordarshan organizes the national competition every year in the month of March in
association with MIT group of Institutes, Pune. Various engineering institutes across India
including NITs and IITs take part in the event and show case their best talent in the field of
Robotics. Since its inception in 2002, Team Nirma has been participating consistently in the
event. The Event of Year 2002, the year of inception, host by Japan on the theme named
“Reach for the top of Mt. Fuji” where robots are to climb the mountains. Team Nirma won
the national game biting IIT, Delhi and represented India in international Event for the first
time.

Fig. 4.1 Robocon 2002

Later in year 2003, the theme named “Takraw Space Conquer” - Robots playing Basketball
declared by Thailand. Once again Team Nirma won the national game biting IIT, Mumbai
and represented India in International event held at Thailand in 2003 for second time.
Fig. 4.2 Robocon 2003

Team Nirma won the National championship third time in 2006 and represented India at
international event host by Malaysia on the theme of “Building world’s tallest twin towers”.

Fig. 4.3 Robocon 2006

India host the international event very first time in year 2008 and announced the theme
named “Govinda” based on the traditional festival of Dahi Handi in India. Team Nirma won
the national game again for the fourth time and played at international level. Team India
represented by Team Nirma had been qualified till quarter finals and won the Mabuchi Motor
Award in international competition.
Fig. 4.4 Robocon 2008

In year 2011, Team Nirma bit IIT, Bombay in finals at National event and secured the
National champions title for the fifth time. Team Nirma Robocon again represented India in
international event host by Thailand on the theme “Loy Krathong”.

Fig. 4.5 Robocon 2011

Theme of robocon 2014, “Salute to Parenthood” was announced by India to host the
international event for the second time. Nirma became the national champion for the sixth
time and competed with various countries’ team in international event as Team India.
Fig. 4.6 Robocon 2014

A record breaking seventh time national championship title has been earned by Team Nirma
Robocon in 2015 for the theme of “Robominton” – Robots playing doubles badminton, host
by Indonesia. Team also won Toyota Award for the innovative design at international event.

Fig. 4.7 Robocon 2015

In year 2017, Team Nirma Robocon stood 5th at national competition and won Best
Innovative Design award.
Presently Team Nirma Robocon has started the preparation for the coming National
competition to be held at Pune in March 2018 based on the theme released by Vietnam as
International host.
It is a matter of proud that Team Nirma is the only team in India so far having 7 times
national champion title and that is earned by the extreme hard work and team work of the
student members and also by the strong financial support of Nirma Management. Team
Nirma Robocon is consistently trying hard to prosper our great country India at International
event.
