Rabindranath Tagore

Rabindranath Tagore was a renowned Bengali polymath who won the 1913 Nobel Prize in Literature. He was born in 1861 in Calcutta, British India and died in 1941, also in Calcutta. Tagore was a writer, poet, playwright, composer, philosopher and painter who pioneered new prose and verse forms. He founded schools in Santiniketan which used innovative teaching methods. Tagore voiced criticism of British colonialism and nationalism, and was the first Asian Nobel laureate.

- Good afternoon, my name is Rabindranath Tagore.


- May 7, 1861. Born in Calcutta, British India

- I’ve altogether of 13 siblings and I’m the youngest of all.
- raised by maid, because mother died, and father travels.
- Like writing, and my first poem was written when I was 8. also wrote
short stories and poem collection later on.
- Motivation: reading the classical poetry of Kalidasa, brothers and
sisters.
- Trained at home among siblings: gymnastics, martial arts, anatomy,
literature, history and mathematics
- In 1873, joined my father to travel and learned about Sikhism. (motivates to
write more poem and articles.)
- I was sent to England in the year 1878 as my father wanted me to become
a barrister.
- My traditional education began in Brighton, East Sussex, England, at a
public school.
- Enter University in London but dropped out and learned several works of
Shakespeare on my own.

Beside from being a poet, I was also an actor in plays I wrote named ‘Valmiki
Pratibha.’

- Moreover, my styles had certain peculiarities in aesthetics and coloring


schemes, which distinguished it from those of other artists.

- Though I denounced nationalism, I also vouched for the Indian


independence through some of my politically charged songs.
- I also supported Indian nationalists and publicly criticized European
imperialism.

- In 1915, I received knighthood from the British Crown, which he later
renounced it. I said that the “knighthood meant nothing to me when the
British failed to even consider my fellow Indians as humans.

Legacy
- changed the way Bengali literature was viewed, he left an
everlasting impression on many.
- Many of my works were made international,thank you to the translators.
- Lastly, thx that 5 museums were built for me.
