Strategy: Fluency: choral and echo
Objective/Purpose/Instructional Goals: To strengthen the students' ability to read
fluently and increase the students existing
knowledge about comprehending through
choral reading and echo reading.
Texts/Resources/Materials: Book Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you
see? By Bill Martin Jr/Eric Carle
5 Little Monkey story on Notecards
Small ball

Picture of 5 Monkeys jumping on a bed
Words picked out from the story
Post-it notes
Assessment(s): Pre-Assessment: Student and teacher will
read "5 Little Monkeys" (choral reading).
Student will be introduced to echo reading by
pretending they are in a cave and what might
happen if they talk. We will practice the 5
little monkeys with echo reading.
Formative Assessment: Student will practice
choral reading and echo reading while teacher
reads the book Brown Bear Brown Bear,
What Do You See?
Summative Assessment: Student will
summarize what he has learned about Choral
reading and Echo reading and how they help
him become a more fluent reader.
Furthermore, student will recognize and be
able to read the words picked out from the
story.
Brief outline (Activities): 1. Pre Reading: Teacher will give student
Level E reading, record his reading, and grade
him according to the rubric. This will give the
teacher a baseline from where to build the
learners fluency.
2. After, teacher will introduce the concept of
fluency and that the goal for today is get
better at reading quickly, accurately, and with
expression.
3. Teacher will show a picture of a cave to the
student and ask what he sees. "If you were to
yell in this cave, what would happen?"
Teacher may keep asking questions if student
does not know. (A: Echo) Teacher will tell
student about echo reading.
• Teacher will show picture of 5
monkeys on a bed and ask student to
describe what he sees. This will
expand the students' comprehension
about the little story we will read, so
he can visualize it
• Teacher will read 5 Little Monkeys
while the student echoes their reading.
Every time it is the students turn to
read, teacher will pass the small ball to
them (Listening to reading)
4. Teacher will tell student about choral
reading: reading together. "What is good
about reading something together?" (A: If
someone doesn't know a word, they can
follow along with someone else)
• Teacher and student will choral read 5
Little Monkeys together.
5. Teacher will review what echo and choral
reading are and ask student to quickly draw a
picture on the post-it note to help him
remember what they mean.
6. During Reading: Will read Brown Bear...
• Will choral read during the "____
what do you see"
• Will echo read during the "I see a ___
looking at me"
• Will echo read the last page. (at first
sentence by sentence, then see if the
student can repeat the whole page
after you)

5. Post Reading: Ask comprehension
questions. Make sure the student understands
the story. "Can you summarize what we just
read?" "Any questions you still have?"
6. Teacher will lay out notecards of a few
words read in the story. Teacher will ask
student to visualize the word and talk about
what he thinks it means.
• Reread to find those words in the book
and...
• Teacher will read the sentence that
contains the words, student will echo.
• Teacher and student will choral read
the sentences.
• Student will read sentences
individually.
