Lesson 2
UTL- 101
Prof. K. Martin
Mrs. Becerra/2nd grade April 18, 2018
Name of Lesson:
Hemispheres, the Equator, Prime Meridian and Compass Rose
TEK/TEKS:
Social Studies, Second Grade, Beginning with School Year 2017-2018
Social Studies, Students recall there are hemispheres that can be identified
using a compass rose and a prime meridian and equator that separate them.
Students are expected to identify where the hemispheres are located using
the compass rose and label the prime meridian and equator
Performance Objective:
At the conclusion of this lesson, the students will be able to identify the
hemispheres, locate the equator and prime meridian, and recognize how to
use a compass rose. Students will complete an activity in partners where
they identify all of the components mentioned in the lesson (4
hemispheres, equator, and prime meridian with knowledge of the compass
rose).

Gagne’s Nine Events of Instruction
1. Gain Attention
I will start by having students sit at the rug. I will show them a map of the
world from an atlas. I will ask students if they know the purpose of a map.
What is it used for? What can we learn from it? What can you point out to
me from the map? After they have answered I will tell them those are all
really good answers because when they learn about the world map, those
are all things to keep in mind.
2. Inform the Learner of the Objective
Today we are going to learn about the Earth’s hemispheres and the line
that divides them called the equator and prime meridian. We will use the
compass rose to determine where the hemispheres are located based on
the equator and prime meridian.
3. Stimulate Recall of Prior Knowledge
I will start by asking students if they know what the compass rose is and
what they can tell me about the compass rose (how does it work? What is it
used for?). Then I will ask them to talk quietly in groups on how they can
use the compass rose to identify the 4 hemispheres. After a minute, I will
ask the students to share what they discussed in their groups and will
choose 2 or 3 groups. After they are done sharing, I will tell them that we
are going to learn about the 4 hemispheres, the equator, prime meridian,
and the compass rose.
4. Present the Material
I will start by calling students attention to the front of the room where the
screen is. I will show them a short 50 second video of the Earth’s
hemispheres. After the video, I will discuss with them more in depth over
the hemispheres and explain how the equator and prime meridian divides
them. I will tell them that we will shortly do a quick activity over labeling
the compass rose that will help them identify the hemispheres for the
following activity. In order to CFU, I will ask them to identify the main idea
of the lesson and tell me why it is important.
5. Provide Guidance to the Learner
I will tell the students that we will first start the compass rose activity. In
labeling the compass rose I will guide them by telling them that north is up,
south is down, east is right, and west is left so they can label the compass.
Afterwards, I will teach them an acronym to remember the compass
(Never Eat Sour Watermelons) and that it is labeled clockwise. After the
compass activity, we will move on to the map exercise. In front of them
they will have a map with the continents and oceans of the world. They will
start by folding the paper in half hamburger style (that is the equator and
will be traced in red). Then they will fold the paper hotdog style (that is the
prime meridian and will be traced in purple). Using their compass rose,
they will identify the North, East, South, and West hemisphere and color
them different colors.
6. Elicit Performance
Students will work in their table groups.
Students will be labeling the North, East, South, and West hemisphere, the
prime meridian, and equator
I will help students work on identifying the North, East, South, and West
hemisphere as well as the prime meridian and equator. I will be using the
doc cam in the front of the classroom to guide them along the process. I
will show them where the prime meridian and equator is then use the
compass to show them where the North hemisphere is located. Once I do
that I will walk around the room and look for correct labeling. If I see an
incorrect label I will tell the student, “I see a hemisphere that is labeled
incorrectly. Go back and use your compass rose to see if you can find what
hemisphere that’s supposed to be.”
7. Give Feedback
“you are doing an awesome job labeling the hemispheres correctly.”
“can you tell me how you were able to label this hemisphere? (student
answer) you are absolutely right! You are a pro at labeling hemispheres.”
“I like how you helped your classmate use the compass rose and identify
that hemisphere. Great job helping others.”
8. Assess Performance
I will assess the students as a whole class.
I will ask questions like “can you locate the equator and point at it? Can you
locate and point at the eastern hemisphere?” and so on. If a student is
having trouble locating a hemisphere, I will go back and demonstrate how
to find it using the compass rose.
9. Enhance Retention and Transfer
Today we learned about the 4 hemispheres, the equator, and prime
meridian using the compass rose. We were able to identify and label them
correctly. Tell your partner how using a compass rose was either easier or
harder in identifying the hemispheres. Then you will share with the class.
I will tell students to remember how to use a compass rose to identify the
hemispheres because it will come in handy when they start their research
projects and is something they will need to remember for other grades.
