Standard: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.1.3.B Decode regularly spelled one-syllable words.
Topic: CVC Explicit Phonics
Goal: The goal is to help children begin the decoding process of simple regularly read CVC words. This
will increase their fluency and enhance automaticity skills with reading.
Learning Objective: Students will be able to decode CVC words 4 out of 5 times given C blank C words
that will fill with short vowel sounds.
Attention Getter: Review short vowel sounds.
Teach/Model: (I do) Write 5 CVC words on the board. Rug, mat, sit, bed, lot. (Make sure that each short
vowel sound is represented in at least one of the CVC words. Begin segmenting and changing the initial
consonant to make rhyming words. Use the FISH strategy to teach how to move from each letter and
blend them together.
Guided Practice: (We do) Play a game in which you split the class into two separate groups. Have
pictures of common CVC words. After a group collaboration of what the word is and how to spell it, have
the children each take turns racing to the board and writing the CVC word. The team with the most
correct wins.
Independent Practice: (You do) Give each child a worksheet in which they are giving a series of CVC
words with the vowel missing. They are to create legit CVC words by inserting a short vowel. For
example, C_T. The child would insert an A, spelling the word cat. To make sure the child is not just
guessing, have the child either give a short description or a picture of the CVC word to ensure full
understanding and decoding skills.
Lesson Closure: After the worksheet, come back together to discuss when these CVC words will pop up
in their life. Show several environmental print examples that the children will decode together as a class.
They will be able to understand how important and applicable CVC words are. Celebrate the beginning
advances into reading and decoding words.
Assessment: Collect worksheet and check to see if 4 out of the 5 CVC words are correct.
