Grade level: 2 Lesson: Symmetry
Subject matter: Math Time: 50 minutes
Objectives: Students will be able to:
Define symmetry
Mark what is symmetrical and what is not symmetrical
Draw the line of symmetry
Needed Materials: shapes already done by me, papers, ruler, paintings.
Instructional Procedures: We will do some activities, solve exercises from the book, and
paint.
1. First, define symmetry.
Start with the activity: The first shape is a heart: I try to fold it and ask them what they see.
So this half is equal to this half, which means this half is the same as that. This is called
symmetrical. I will use the ruler to draw a line where I folded the heart, it’s called the line of
symmetry.
2. Pair work: Give each pair of students a triangle, tell them to draw the line of
symmetry using a ruler. Do the same with the star, square, arrow, oval, and the
rectangle. Give them the circles, let them draw the line of symmetry. Hold all the
circles together on the board and show them that the line of symmetry could be
vertical, horizontal, or diagonal (but it should be straight).
Show them the cloud ask them where can we draw the line of symmetry; they will try in all
directions. It’s not symmetrical.
Assessment: Ask the students to solve numbers 2 and 3 page 97, 98. Check on their work.
3. Second Activity: Open the graph paper on the projector, locate some points and a line
of symmetry, ask them to locate it’s symmetrical. Do the same but with a shape not
points.
Assessment: Solve numbers: 1, 4, 5 page 97, 99. Guide them and check on their work.
Closure: I will give the students folded papers into halves and then pass by them to draw
shapes on the first half by the paintings and ask them to fold their papers to get a symmetrical
shape; they can keep it with them.
