Elevated Zero Maze (EZM)

2014-
- Elevated Zero Maze (EZM): ring-shaped
maze with open and closed arms
- Dam placed in closed arm of EZM
- Tested on postnatal days (PND) 3 and 4

2018-
- One pup placed in each open arm
- Pups placed in folded plastic boats to
prevent falling
- Dams expected to retrieve pups

- Score Videos from 2014 study
- “Scoring” means marking behavior in videos
- Scoring 5 minute videos, each taking
between 30-45 minutes. (50 videos total)
- Then running statistics*

Importance & Process
- Older data allows insight on new - Before scoring, training and
data if studies are progressing testing is done to prove liability
with better conclusions - Testing took a week: 2 practice
- Adds to completed lab studies days, 2 testing days, 1 solo
practice day
Hypothesis

2018- 2014-
- Between PND (Postnatal Day) 3 & 4, - Quantified by: Time in open arms,
anxiety in dams will significantly time spent Head poking (HP)
decrease and Stretch attends (SA)
- Quantified by: Time spent self-grooming,
time in open arms

Differences:
The 2018 study focuses on more actions than previous studies done.
Conclusions

- Conclusions are found via running


statistics from information.
- Information is entered into a
statistics program
- Takes about 2-3 days

Project conclusion:
There is no difference in anxiety within primiparous and multiparous mothers
Based on latencies (SA, HP, F.E) & Cumulative Time (O,C,SA,HP) of 48 mice
