The Graduation
Part I

Alberta was finally graduating from college. She was older than many of the other graduates but she knew that she would
enjoy the graduation ceremony a lot more than they would. She had worked so hard to save the money to go to school.
She’d cleaned people’s homes—sweeping, dusting, polishing, and starching—six days a week to save money. She had
worked for years trying to save enough money to go to college. Still, she had earned too little money to achieve her dream
on her own. Luckily, she had heard about a new government program that offered to help working people like her go to
college. As soon as she heard about it, she hurried to apply for the help. She took the money that she had saved plus the
government aid and enrolled in school the next semester.

She faced the myriad challenges of the university by working just as hard as she had worked as a domestic worker. She
was always the first person in her classroom and always stayed after class to ask the professors questions. She took every
chance she could to learn from the scholars at the university and from her classmates.

Her long journey had finally brought her to graduation day. She sat through the fanfare of the ceremony with a feeling of
complete happiness and accomplishment. She listened to the applause of the friends and family members in the audience
as they congratulated her and the other graduates. She looked forward to her next challenge in life with confidence.
