DELTA LBA2 - Language Skills 13h October 2005

Commentary

All the students who attend this class have an L1 (Spanish/German) which shares

the English script. They do not have as many problems as other nationalities might,

but are relatively unaccustomed to reading in English, and their communication skills

greatly exceed their reading ability.

The four weeks I have spent with these students are coming to an end, and I want

to motivate these students to carry on studying English independently outside of

the class although they do have another 4 weeks studying here.

The most effective way of extending language is through extensive reading, but if

they feel that it is beyond them, the learners may feel reluctant to buy any of the

magazines or newspapers which are readily available. I hope to encourage them to

try expanding their reading from increasing their interest in the types of articles

available in both this and other similarly accessible genres of text.

The students will have an opportunity to select the text they read from three texts

on related topics connected with current trends in London dating. Although their

element of choice is still constrained by my selection of the topic, I hope that they

will find it motivating to be able to express a preference.

I feel that the subject matter will appeal to them, as they are young and interested

in developing their awareness of popular culture in England. I will activate their

schematic knowledge through a prediction task based on the titles, and I hope this

will create curiosity in the subject and provide a legitimate reason for reading the

texts. They will have opportunity to develop their reading skills; firstly, through

skimming the article to check their predictions, and then by a more detailed reading

in which they will have to consider the advantages and disadvantages to the types of

dating they have read about.

After reading, they will have an opportunity to express their personal reaction to

the text and explain why they would, or wouldn’t, try this out themselves or

recommend it to a single friend. This is a typical way of reflecting on a magazine

article that is designed to entertain and inform.

As reading is a natural way of extending language knowledge, the supporting systems

work will focus on lexical awareness. The learners will do some work on identifying

common verb noun collocations from the text, and try to infer the meaning of

unknown words or phrases from the context. Hopefully developing these strategies

of dealing with new lexical items will build the students confidence and deepen a

sense of learner autonomy in reading.
