Microsoft Word for Beginners
Grade Level 5
Concept/ Topic to Teach:
In this lesson, students will learn how to write a short story using Microsoft Word 2013. This
lesson is an introduction to the program to teach students the basics of forming a word
document.
General Goal:
The goal of this lesson is to have each student successfully type up and format their short story
using Microsoft Word 2013 so that they have a basic knowledge of the extensively used
program.
Specific Objectives:
• Students will learn how to change font and size
• Students will learn how to Align text left, center, and right.
• Students will learn how to double space text
• Students will learn how to Indent
• Students will learn how to bold, italicize, and underline text
• Students will learn how to change the color of text
• Students will learn how to insert a picture
• Students will learn how to save and name their documented work
• Students will learn how to print their work
Required Materials:
• Computer with Microsoft Word 2013 installed
• A printer
• Printer paper
Step-by-Step Procedures
1. Students will write a short biography about themselves consisting of three paragraphs.
2. Students will revise, and edit their work.
3. I will present the PowerPoint presentation “Microsoft Word for Beginners”
4. Students will type their biographies into Word and format their document using at least
five of the new tools they learned in the lesson
5. Students will type a short paragraph at the end of their biography explaining what five
tools they used in Microsoft Word to create their document
6. Students will save their work, print it off and turn it in
Closure:
Students will share their biographies with the class and discuss what they were able to
accomplish using the program Microsoft Word.
