The Referee
I. MATCH
Background
Although the match was considered to be the hardest ever in groupstage on paper, it
wasnt challenging, exciting, etc. Dutch team should have win to qualify, however they
seemed to be relaxed, and bench made some tactical mistakes. And, Germany easily
dominated the game and scored.
The stadium has some problem with layout, fans were far away from the pitch. However,
football atmosphere was amazing. EURO tournament groupstage matches are always
difficult to handle, but the match wasn’t hard for ref. team
Parameter Mark 1: Degree of Difficulty and Importance
AWARDED MARK FOR THIS PARAMETER 75,0
II. CONTROL
Comment
There weren’t any critical situation which referee could be in doubt and affected by
players. Stayed calm. Whenever needed, he talked with players, in some sections, he
answered each question and explained it. It seems that it has become a tradition to show
respect badge on arm to captains before kickoff. Eriksson like Stark showed his badge
and reminded them to act in fairplay.
Exemplary situations that strengthen the general impression
Minute Situation and Assessment
Min 62 Unnecessary complaint to goal-kick decision, player should be warned
Sneijder (#10) has increased complaints as shouting referee. That should be
Min 66
a YC
A YC to Boateng for time-wasting after reckless insistence by Dutch bench,
Min 87
affected by players. But, correct card
Parameter Mark 2: Control
AWARDED MARK FOR THIS PARAMETER 81,0
III. DECISIONS
Application of the Laws of the Game – Comment (advice: always refer to aspects
like card management, infringement detection, the application of the advantage
rule, holding in the penalty area after set pieces, simulation and lay extra ordinary
high emphasis on match influencing or even decisive decisions)
The game wasnt that much demanding. Eriksson was selective in foul detection which
has contributed to flow of game positively. Approximately three penalty appeals have
been rejected by referee (mostly, very soft pushes). All of them were reasonable.
However, he had some problems with disciplinary measures after Min60.Additional times
to each half were reasonable. Cooperation between referee team was really good.
Referee statyed calm under changing environment. However, dynamic pace of game
(sometimes very fast, and sometimes just passes around midfield) resulted in lack of
concentration in some sections.

Important Decisions ((non)given cards should be mentioned, other important
decisions in the opinion of the observer)
Minute Situation and Assessment
No foul detection; an important decision, referee sets his foul standards,
Min 2
expected level
First foul of match, referee yells players for not-to-continue such physical
Min 4
contacts, a little bit exaggerated
Min 12 Good no handball decision, that’s an obvious hit, no deliberate play
Penalty appeals by NED are rejected correctly. There is a soft push by
Min 13
defender in box however no need for a penalty kick, spot on decision
After a correct foul whistle, he missed a handball control by Van Persie, he
Min 16
was also wrongly whistled as offside
Min 20 Neglected a small contact, and contributed to flow of game positively
Min 26 A blatant foul, whistle was required
Min 35 Physical usage of body to prevent Özil to get the ball, foul could be whistled.
A foot tackled behind, however most probably accidentally occurred due to
Min 36
fast running. Foul correct, no YC good
Min 44 Good advantage play before goal attempt of NED, later a YC could be shown
Min 45,46 Correct foul whistles
For third time, there is a physical blocking to Özil, referee insists not to whistle
Min 54
as foul, wrong decision. Özil complains too much, should be warned.
Min 64 A very uncontrollable tackle by NED midfielder, YC was needed.
Penalty appeals by NED, too easy to whistle. GER defender misses the ball
Min 76,77 and hit the leg of NED midfielder. Yes, obvious contact, but not harsh to
extract from the game, understandable decision.
Min 80 Foul and YC to (#8) De Jong, correct
Dutch players are getting out of control. An intentional slap by Huntellar to
Min 82
German midfielder’s nape.
Min 83 Correct handball whistle
Wrong goal-kick decision by team (a combined decision by referee, AR, and
