Comments On Bearings

The document provides comments on bridge bearing designs and drawings that were previously submitted. Specifically, it notes that [1] eccentric forces should be verified for spherical bearings due to rotation, referring to EN-1337 part 7, [2] the design report should show checks for four types of eccentricities, and [3] the drawings are missing a required sealing ring and could be improved by following the enclosed sample drawing. The reviewer requests necessary action be taken on these observations.

Sir,

Sub:Comments on –design and drawings of Main bridge bearings

Ref: Design and drawings submitted on 3/6/18 and 09/7/18

We have reviewed the above subject reference designs and found below observations for your
necessary action.

Design and drawings submitted

1)BLQ-36500 FREE SLIDING

2)BLPZ-2920/292 FIXED

3)BLQZ-8000 FREE SLIDING

4) BLPZ-2920/440 GUIDED

5)BLQZ-36500/FREE SLIDING

1)All checks shown in design note , mainly for axial forces and corresponding lateral loads only. But
for spherical bearings in curved surface due to rotation, eccentricity of forces will develop, that
have to be verified.

The eccenticity is used in verification of PTFE, bearing components and anchor bolts.

EN-1337 part 7 may be referred for this checks as it is not available in AASHTO-LRFD part 14
provisions.

Eccentricites mainly arise due to following conditions.

e1=Eccentricity due to frictional force

e2=Eccentricity in adjacent memebrs and connections due to rotation.

e3= vertical loads due to rotation angle

e4=Eccentricty in fixed bearing due to lateral loads.

Hence above check may be shown in design report.

2)Sealing rings shall be as per AASHTO 14.7.4.5.2 and three rings shall be provided but two rings are
shown, may be corrected.

In additon drawings presenation can be improved, for this a sample drawing has been enclosed.
