ART APPRECIATION
AN INTRODUCTION
TERMS AND CONCEPTS
HUMANITIES:
• refers to ARTS – architecture, painting, sculpture, music, dance,
theater/drama, and literature. These are branches of learning
concerned with human thought, feelings, and relations.
ART:
• It. “artis” – craftmaship, skill, mastery…
• Ary. “ar” – join, put together
• Gr. “artizein/arkiskein” - prepare
NATURE OF ART
The oldest and most important means of expression
A product of man’s need to express himself
It is concerned with the communication of certain ideas and
feelings
Art is that which bring life in harmony with the beauty of the world
Art is an attitude of spirit, a state of mind

v IT MUST BE CREATIVE, NOT IMITATIVE
v IT MUST BENEFIT AND SATISFY MAN

ART APPRECIATION
The ability to interpret or understand man-made arts
It deals with learning or understanding and creating arts and
enjoying them.
Thus, Arts are called Humanities: they bring out the good and the noble
in us, we come to know the changing image of man, his search for
reality, and strives to achieve the ideals that create meaning for life
SUBJECT OF ART
A SUBJECT OF ART IS USUALLY ANYTHING THAT IS REPRESENTED
IN THE ARTWORK – PERSON, OBJECT, SCENE, OR EVENT.

by most people (i.e. painting, they do not represent anything-

APPRECIATION
• UTILITARIAN: IT ENRICHES MAN’S LIFE ENABLING HIM TO LIVE IN
COMFORT AND HAPPINESS; IT IMPROVES NATURE AND
PROPAGATES AND CONSERVES NATURAL RESOURCES

• CULTURAL: ART TRANSMITS AND PRESERVES SKILLS AND
KNOWLEDGE FROM ONE GENERATION TO ANOTHER. IT BURDENS
ONE’S CULTURAL BACKGROUND AND MAKES MAN MORE
CIVILIZED AND HIS LIFE MORE ENDURING AND SATISFYING.
• SOCIAL: MAN LEARNS TO LOVE AND HELP EACH OTHER, IT FOSTERS
COOPERATION AND UNDERSTANDING.
Scope of Art
Arts are classified into two major divisions (Pazino & Rustia, 1995):
According to Purpose: arts are classified into practical arts or
useful arts, liberal arts, fine arts, major arts, and minor arts
According to Media & Forms: arts include plastic arts, phonetic
arts, kinetic arts, pure arts, and mixed arts
According to Purpose
• PRACTICAL/USEFUL ARTS: DIRECTED TO PRODUCE
ARTIFACTS AND UTENSILS FOR THE SATISFACTION OF
HUMAN NEEDS
• LIBERAL ARTS: DIRECTED TOWARD INTELLECTUAL GROWTH
(IE. PHILOSOPHY, PSYCHOLOGY, LITERATURE, MATH AND
SCIENCES)
According to Purpose
• FINE ARTS: FOCUSED TOWARDS CREATIVE ACTIVITY FOR THE
CONTEMPLATION OF THE MIND, AND THE UPLIFT OF THE
SPIRIT (I.E. PAINTING, SCULPTURE, ARCHITECTURE)
• MAJOR ARTS: CHARACTERIZED BY ACTUAL AND POTENTIAL
EXPRESSIVENESS SUCH AS MUSIC, POETRY, SCULPTURE
• MINOR ARTS: CONCERNED ON PRACTICAL USES AND PURPOSES
SUCH AS INTERIOR DECORATION, PORCELAIN ART

• PLASTIC ARTS: DEVELOPED THROUGH SPACE AND
PERCEIVED BY THE SENSE OF SIGHT (I.E. SCULPTURE AND
DECORATIVE MATERIALS)
• KINETIC ARTS: INVOLVE THE ELEMENT RHYTHM (DANCE)
• PHONETIC ARTS: DIRECTED TOWARD SOUNDS AND WORDS
AS MEDIA OF EXPRESSION (MUSIC, DRAMA,
LITERATURE)

• PURE ARTS: TAKE ONLY ONE MEDIUM OF EXPRESSION
LIKE SOUND IN MUSIC AND COLOUR IN PAINTING
• MIXED ARTS: TAKE MORE THAN ONE MEDIUM SUCH AS
THE OPERA WHICH COMBINES MUSIC, POETRY, AND
DRAMA
