Animals and Nature

Four in a Row

Use the overhead trasparency (CD#2) of the graphic below to have a challenging classroom game. Divide
the c lass in ha lf, giving one side a stack of small square markers, and the other half a stack of small round
markers. Put the overhe ad on the pro jector an d ha ve e ach side send up a mem ber (no rep ea ts until
everyone has a turn) to put a m arker on any of the graphics that he/she can identify in Latin. If the
identification is correct, the m arker is left on that g raphic. The other side then gets a turn. The challenge
of the ga me is to ge t four like m arke rs in a line (h orizo ntally, vertca lly, or diagonal). Therefore, strategy and
Latin vocabulary knowledge are both demanded.

Certamen Questions
Certamen (“contest”) is a game played by Latin students in teams of three, four, or five. The
teacher askes a toss-up question, and the students signal (raised hand/slap on desk) if they know
the respon se. The first respo nder (as jud ged by the teacher) gets the first opp ortun ity to answer.
If the answer is correct, his/her team gets awarded 10 points and the opportunity to co llaborate
on a bonus question wo rth 5 points.

If the initial response to the answer is incorrect, a responder from another team may try for the 10
points and subseq uent bonu s. (There are no nega tive pena lties.) At the en d of the questions, the
team with the highest score wins.

The questions below are sam ples. You may need to adjust the difficulty level to meet the needs

JEOPARDY
Classroom jeopardy is a great way to have all students in a class participate in a review of
the material. Begin by making enough copies of the Jeopardy sheets on the next page
so that each student may have a cop y. Then, write the categories and amounts on the
chalkboard.

NUMBERS MO TTOES FAM ILY HISTORY / C L AS SR O O M ANIMALS / ROMAN

CULTURE / B UIL DIN G S NATURE M Y TH O LO G Y

100 100 100 100 100 100 100

200 200 200 200 200 200 200

300 300 300 300 300 300 300

400 400 400 400 400 400 400

500 500 500 500 500 500 500

Next, have stude nts “count off” by A, B, and C to determine the teams. Do not have the
teams sit together. Any students who are left over from the count can become your
assistants who will keep the cate gory board and team totals curren t.

Hand out a Je opardy sheet to each stud ent. Tell the students that since this is team
competition, they should strive to answer the most difficult questions they can, thus saving
easier ones for their own teamm ates. They may not confer with each other at this time or
during play.

To begin play, have the first member of the A-team select any value question in any
category. After you read the “answer” from the Answer Teacher Key aloud, the student is
to ask the appropriate question for that answer. (e.g. NUMBERS for 100 wo uld be “Wha t is
octo?”)

If the response is correct,

then the A-team gets the points and the selection is erased from the board.

If the resp onse is incorrect,

no points are added or subtracted, and the question rema ins in play.

Whether the response from the first A-team m ember is correct or not, th e next turn is for the
first mem ber of the B-team . This student may select the same question (if it was answered
incorrectly) or a totally differen t que stion. Play continues aroun d the room in the A-B-C, first-
second-third..., pattern until all categories are erased or until class time is over. Each
student should have an opportun ity to play at least onc e. Altho ugh the re is no penalty for
a wrong answer, sometimes students want to pass on their turns. This is acceptable. The
winning team is that one which has accumulated the highest number of points at the end
of the session.
