Handout 1 Community Circle

This document provides instructions for an activity where participants identify communities they belong to, places within those communities where they feel comfortable, and how they present themselves in each community. Participants are asked to list communities in each quadrant of a dark circle, places within those communities in a lighter circle, and ways they present themselves in those communities and places in the largest white circle.

Instructions:

1. For each qudrant of the darkest circle, list a community you feel a part of. It might be your family
group, your circle of friends, or an online community.
2. In the lighter circle, write down the place you feel most comfortable in that community (you might
list “school” for you friends community, or “Xbox Live” for your gaming community, for example).
3. In the largest white circle, list some ways you might present yourself in these communities and
spaces (you may be more “polite” with your family community and more “aggressive” with your
community of teammates, for example).
