LESSON PLAN

Content Area: Culture Stage I 1.2 Recognize similarities and differences in the target cultures and between students’ own cultures.

Common Core State Standard: C2 Culture Comparisons: Students demonstrate understanding of similarities and differences within target
cultures and among students’ own cultures.

Objective: SWBAT compare and contrast their own culture with the target culture. This will include similarities and differences between their
foods and traditions.

Anticipatory Set: (How to get their attention) For this section students should have a basic knowledge of their own culture to be able to compare
it to another. Warm-up: Discuss with a partner the foods that your family/culture is most likely to have for a holiday. What are some of the
traditions that your family carries from your culture? Come up with at least 3 items for each question.

Direct Instruction/Guided Practice: 1. Discuss as a class the warm-up. (Allow students to share stories.)
2. Students will read a short informative piece on a specific Spanish-speaking country, in groups and reflect on their culture in the process. How
does these celebrations/traditions compare to your culture? Do you do anything similar/different? What do you think about these traditions?

Instructional Strategy: Peer teaching/ collaboration (students are the main focus, interaction is important, students discuss concepts.

Closure (Lesson Wrap-Up): Discuss with a group of four, how the traditions that you just heard and read are similar/ different than yours? What
are some of the traditions from that culture that you liked and disliked? What are some traditions that you would like to try or at least witness?

Independent Practice (Homework/Classroom Activity): Students will fill out a Venn diagram, independently, comparing and contrasting their
culture to the target culture. They must include at least 6 items for each section of the Venn diagram.

Formative Assessment: Kahoot! Game. (List about 10 traditions and have students decide whether it is the target culture tradition, their own or
both.)

-Target language informative piece
- Venn diagram
- Kahoot! game
