Reflection
HyoungSu Lee
For future students,
Hello,
I am HyoungSu Lee. I took English 2100 during the summer of 2018. It was a very tough
semester since it is a summer one. There are tasks to do with the service learning project
besides homework. Service learning is one of the heaviest parts of this class. When I heard first
time about service learning, I did not have any idea about it. I am just not a person who is into
the community service. I have never really thought about helping others in the community
while I am attending school. I know I should have some sort of volunteer service time for
my resume, but that is about it. That is what most students do their volunteer work. I know it is
sad to hear it. However, it was true for me, and I have heard from many friends they are doing
volunteers for the resumes.
I have changed my mind doing service learning in English 2100. I thought there are not
many ways to work with community while I am in school. But, there are so many programs that
school connects students to the community service in many fields. So, students can face the
real-case scenarios while working for community. Isn’t that fascinating? It is like we are doing
internships to help our community for public interests. It is killing two birds with one stone!
There are also some financial aid school can provide through service learning. There are some
chances to earn your tuition while service learning. Students do not know this wonderful fact.
My service learning project is making a handout introducing the Thayne Center; the place
makes a connection between students and public service providers.
It was my pleasure to make promotional material for the Thayne Center. Even if they are
not using my work. At least, I have found some great information about it throughout the
process of making it. So, I can inform anyone I want to. There are many great chances students
can get from the Thayne Center. You should visit it! It is in the basement of the student center
at Redwood campus. I hope you enjoy service learning.
Best regards,
HyoungSu Lee
