Laboratory Exercise 1

Introduction of Basic Tool and Color Composition Images

Lab Instructions: Dr.Kiyoshi Honda and Mr. Chudench Losiri

Objective: to familiarize with image processing software and multi spectral data

Material: Sample datasets of Landsat 5 data

We will open and manipulate individual band of Landsat Thematic Mapper data using ERDAS IMAGINE.

The series of instructions below are designed to be self-contained, but if confusion arises, software
manuals may need to be consulted. We will now explore the ERDAS IMAGINE software package. Some
of this is modified from the ERDAS IMAGINE tutorials and user gaide.

2. Display satellite image

2.1 Click VIEWER icon

2.2 At this viewer, go to File->Open->Raster Layer… , then choose the folder where image file exists.

2.3 Double click on that file to open in VIEWER.

Color Composite: True, False color and Pseudo color

Color composite: A color image can be generated by composing three selected multi-band images with
the use of three primary colors. Difference color images may be obtained depending on the selection of
three band images and the assignment of the three primary colors.

True Color Composite: When three filters of B, G and R are assigned to the same spectral regions of
blue, green and red, almost the same color as the natural scale, can be reproduced, and is called a true
Color or natural color composite.

False color composite: in addition, if invisible regions, such as infrared, are allocated in to RGB. This will
be called False color composite.

True Color Composite

Fellow step 2.1 and 2.2. At the raster options, select as following:

Display as: True color

Display layer: Click on the band 3 for red, then click on the band 2 for green, and finally the band 1 for
blue.
False color composite

Fellow step 2.1 and 2.2. At the raster options, select as following:

Display as: True color

Display layer: Click on the band 4 for red, then click on the band 3 for green, and finally the band 2 for
blue.

Pseudo color: Difference colors are assigned to the subdivided gray scale of a sign image. Such as color
allocation is called Pseudo color. For example, a pseudo color image of a thermal infrared image will give
a temperature map.

Pseudo color

- Fellow step 2.1 and 2.2. At the raster options, select as following:
Display as: Pseudo color
Display layer: Layer 6
- Select ”Raster” in the menu bar on the viewer window and select “Attributes”
- Select “edit” in menu bar on the raster attribute editor window and select “colors”
- In the color window, set as following after that click apply
