Accurate Basemap For Urban Projects Using H.R. Stereo Satellite Imagery

The document discusses the process of building an accurate GIS basemap for urban planning projects using high resolution stereo satellite imagery. The key steps include acquiring stereo satellite imagery, collecting GPS ground control, performing aerial triangulation adjustment, collecting 3D topographic feature data, cleaning topological data, creating 3D buildings and a digital terrain model, generating derived products like contours and orthorectified imagery, and collecting field data with attributes. The use of stereo satellite imagery allows for cost-effective 3D mapping of urban areas.

Rectification of the stereo satellite imagery.

Based on extend of the area the definition

of the number of GCPs will be determined
To provide maximum accuracy with minimum
Ground Points for rectification.

Satellite Triangulation

Using the most advanced commercial Remote Sensing software in the Triangulation

Inputs: RPCs (Sensor geometric parameter) of both images + GPS Ground Control Points in
addition to the generation of the Tie points spread over the stereo Model in the AT.

model will be ready for 3D data
collection:

 3D Topographic feature including

3D terrain breaks & spaced DTM for
the accurate generation of DTM
generation

Where the following products will be

produced:

 GIS Topographic mapping

3D Topographic Feature Collection

The 3D Topographic features means; mapping all Landuse layers found on stereo image
such as: Buildings, Roads, Street furniture, Green areas, Water Bodies, Bridges, Open
areas, Vacant Lands, Boundaries, Walls, Fences…etc

Topology Cleaning prior GIS conversion
MicroMAPS is an in-house Fugro MAPS development; it has been developed to exploit the
new capabilities of digital stereo workstations, the constructive power of CAD, the
automation facilities provided by GIS and the management of databases. MicroMAPS
enables collection and editing of structured digital mapping within quality assurance and
quality control procedures.

Topology Cleaning in carried out inside MicroMAPS prior the conversion to GIS “MMPW
Geodatabase” for the Master Plan projects

The cleaning involves;

Removal of dangles (over shots and under shoot), overlapping of segments, duplications
of data, missing or multiple centroids, voids…etc

Seventh Conference of Arab Experts on Geographical Names - Jordan www.fugrogeospatial .com

Geodatabase Design

Geodatabase design was

commenced for the
project based on the client
requirement “Ministry of
Municipalities & Public
Works – Urban Planning
departments” where:

• Feature Datasets were

created for the Landuse
with

• Topographic Landuse
Feature Classes including
Domains and Subtypes

Seventh Conference of Arab Experts on Geographical Names - Jordan www.fugrogeospatial .com

Field data Preparation for Field Collection

GIS basemap was prepared for the field Surveyors:

1. The Landuse layers (Parcel Boundaries, Buildings and Landuse feature classes)
were overlaid on top of the orthorectified corrected imagery.

2. Using the extension “Hawths Tool” in ArcGIS , Hawth's Analysis Tools is an

extension for ESRI's ArcGIS to generate random points (or stratified random point)
for the demographic data collection in addition to the full survey of the built up
boundaries.

3. Field Templates were generated to meet the project requirement for the full
attributes

4. Centroids point generation of the digitized boundaries were performed and fed
into the handheld GPSs’ of the survey crew for field data collection

5. Project area was divided into sectors and spread among the field crews for
speeding up the data collection.

attribute data
collection

after topological cleaning stage. This GIS basemap was sent to the field for data attributes
collection.

4. Medical-SurveyTemplate
5. Social-Security-Institutions-SurveyTemplate
6. Other-Social-Institutions-SurveyTemplate

collected from the
various department
within the city and
were converted in GIS

• Telecom
• Power
• Sewer
• Solid Waste

Advantages of Stereo Mapping verses Mono

Below table shows the importance of carrying out base mapping from Stereo Satellite
imagery verses the usage of Mono ortho-satellite

3D Mapping from Stereo Satellite 2D Mapping from Mono Ortho-Satellite

3D data collection (XY & Z) 2D Data collection only (XY)
Generate accurate DTM & Contours Not possible.
High positional accuracy of Building prints Less accurate due to inclination .
Generalization of features is minimal More Generalization is considered

Determine well the boundaries of small & sometimes is missing leading

Dense features / Objects
Easier in feature classification Sometimes harder, where skilled staff are
required.
Serves Multi-user segments Limitations on Multi-user usage

Seventh Conference of Arab Experts on Geographical Names - Jordan www.fugrogeospatial .com

Recommendations

For establishing accurate basemap, we recommend the

use of

“Stereo Digital Mapping Techniques“

to provide various 3D-products that serve

Multi-user segments
