Verapamil HCL

Valproic acid, branded as Depakene and Depakote, is an antiepileptic drug used to treat bipolar disorder and mania. It works by increasing levels of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA. Common side effects include sedation, hair loss, and potentially life-threatening pancreatitis or liver failure. When prescribing for acute mania or bipolar disorder, the recommended dosage is 25 mg/kg/day orally, increasing up to a maximum of 60 mg/kg/day. Nursing responsibilities include gradually reducing dosage if side effects occur, discontinuing immediately for hepatic impairment, and monitoring for signs of pancreatitis or changes in liver function.
