ABSTRACT
Over the past several decades, gerontologists, policy makers, and public health officials have
generated a notion of "successful aging" in an attempt to stipulate the factors that influence
an elder's ability to age well. Within existing research models, the elder voice is dominated
by conflicting and ambiguous researcher driven conceptual models of successful aging. This
study aimed to understand how elders themselves define successful aging and the factors
that constitute it. A layperson definition of successful aging was determined by interviewing
ten elders of varying socioeconomic status throughout the city of General Santos.
Respondents vocalized that participation in meaningful activities as well as possessing a
positive attitude are critical components of a successfully aging individual. Respondents
included acceptance of chronic illnesses within the definition of successful aging as long as
the illness did not hinder the individual's ability to maintain their independence. Additional
factors important to successful aging were highlighted within this work. Respondents
determined an especially strong association between independence and successful aging.
Additionally, respondents conveyed elevated levels of satisfaction to be associated with
successful aging. Respondents conveyed a desire to have busy and active schedules. Finally,
respondents revealed that limited income negatively impacts an individual's health and
overall well-being however, respondents revealed that challenges associated with limited
incomes could be compensated for with other successful aging criteria.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
It is a great opportunity for the researchers to present this research project to GSDMSFI,
entitled: The Perspective of Older Adults on Successful Aging in General Santos City.
Firstly, the researchers acknowledge their research instructor, Ester Rodulfa RN, MAN,
MM and their SHS principal, Anna Claire Faelden, MAED who have given approval of this
project, have always been sincere and helpful in making them understand the different
ways of making the research paper, for giving constant encouragement and for sharing
expertise to the researchers.
Secondly, to the parents of the researchers who gave their support not just financially but
also emotionally. If it were not for them, the researchers would not have the will to
complete the research project.
The researchers would also like to thank the project’s panelists, who gave proper
judgement and recommendation to the researchers and for their paper.
Most importantly, the research project will not be made possible if it were not for the
presence of God who gave the researchers the strength and knowledge to make all the
ways and steps needed to be undergone by the researchers.
The researchers would have failed in making this project without the presence of the
individuals mentioned. Truly, all their efforts in motivating and imparting knowledge were
never wasted.
