RECAP
TEASER
FADE IN:
GALE (V.O.)
Hello.
BILLY
Gale, please don’t hang up...
KUMAR (17), FELIX (17), J.R., and the lone female, GRACIE
(17) are cleaning up debris in the pouring rain. They’re
doing community service. They’re miserable.
KUMAR
Man this is fucked up! They don’t have
trash inside?
FELIX
It’s suppose to be punishment,
dickhead.
KUMAR
Fuck you, ass wipe.
J.R.
What? What is it?
GRACIE
You missed a spot.
3.
J.R.
Thanks.
IRIS
I’m not at all surprised. After the
girl admitted on national television
that the whole thing was a set up, it
was only a matter of time.
(listens)
Yes, I’ll want Spencer-Hayworth as
outside counsel on this.
(listens)
No, you’d better let me break this to
Chancellor Reed. He’s going to have a
cow.
Sonny sits naked on the sofa. A naked girl with olive skin
and long dark hair (we don’t see who she is yet) is on his
lap, slowly riding him, moaning softly with pleasure.
Sonny looks at her with adoring eyes, speaks to her in
fluent Italian.
SONNY
Yeah, baby, that’s it...That’s it. My
God, you’re so beautiful.
SONNY (O.S.)
Yeah, Cake. Come on. Come for me,
baby. Oh, Cake...I love you so much.
CAKE
(getting off him)
Jesus, Sonny! I told you never to say
that!
SONNY
But Cake, baby, I do love you. Why
can’t I say it?
CAKE
(screaming)
I hate you! I hate you! I hate you!
END TEASER
ACT ONE
REED
When do we expect the suit to be filed?
IRIS
By close of business today. We should
receive official service of notice by
mid day tomorrow.
REED
And how long before this hits the
press?
FLYNN
If they’re smart, the law firm will
issue a press release as soon as the
papers are filed, so late this
afternoon.
REED
And we’re sure every aspect of
Henderson’s suspension was handled
appropriately?
CHARLOTTE
Yes, Chancellor. Everything was
handled to the letter.
REED
You’re absolutely sure? Donahue was
never in favor of removing Henderson
from the team. He could have signaled
that there would be a spot waiting for
him once this all blew away.
CHARLOTTE
Stripping Walter of his scholarship and
suspending him indefinitely was my
call. Billy cares about his players,
but he’s not stupid. He wouldn’t buck
my authority on this. All the bases are
covered, Sebastian.
Cara walks into the lounge. The players who notice her –
which is almost all of them - are dumbstruck. Girls aren’t
allowed in their inner sanctum. The MAN who tried to stop
Cara comes up quickly behind her.
MAN
Miss, the lounge is for football
players only. I’m afraid you have to
leave.
She ignores him, eyes searching the room. She spots Dallas
reading a MAXIM magazine with his headphones on and strides
over to him.
MAN
Hey! Stop!
CARA
We need to talk.
6.
MAN
I’m serious young lady. You have to
leave now or I’ll call security.
CARA
Dallas, you know I care about you and
you know it’s complicated with me and
Lindsay.
DALLAS
I don’t want complicated, Cat. I want
a girl who doesn’t play games, who
doesn’t creep around and who knows what
she wants. Simple.
CARA
Things were simple between us, Dallas.
And good. Until you had to go all
Latin on me and get possessive.
DALLAS
Possessive? That’s funny, Cat, I
thought they called it ‘dating’ when a
girl went out with only one guy at a
time.
CARA
Why are you calling me that now?
DALLAS
It’s your name, isn’t it? That’s what
everybody calls you, isn’t it?
CARA
I get it. I’m not special to you
anymore. Is that it?
DALLAS
Look, Cat, I’m done playing games. You
had a choice the other day and you made
it. I hope you and Hollywood are happy
together.
CARA
Come on, Dallas, don’t be like this...
7.
SANTINO
Hey, beautiful! How’s my favorite
niece?
CAKE
I’m your only niece, Uncle Sonny.
SANTINO
Still doesn’t change the facts. So,
Cupcake, what brings you down today?
CAKE
The Miata’s acting up again. I was
hoping one of the guys could take a
look at it.
SANTINO
(a knowing smile)
You mean you’re tired of it and you
want something new.
CAKE
I didn’t say that.
SANTINO
But that’s what you meant. I know you,
Cupcake. You’re just like your mother.
You want what you want when you want
it. I swear I don’t know how Tony puts
up with the both of you.
She smiles.
SANTINO
Sonny, come over here!
SONNY
Hey, Cake.
CAKE
Sonny.
SANTINO
Sonny, take Cake onto the lot and let
her pick something out. Have one of
the boys put dealer tags on it before
she goes.
SONNY
Okay, Dad.
BULL HEFFERNAN
BYU’s got great speed on the outside
and Jenkins has a rocket arm. He’ll go
deep if we let him.
JOE MERCER
We’ll get in his face...and knock him
on his ass.
BILLY
That’s pretty bold talk, Joe. He’s
only been sacked 6 times all season.
MERCER
I’ll put it out there now, Coach.
We’ll get to him at least twice.
HEFFERNAN
What’s the over-under on the sack
count? I’ll want in on some of that
action.
KIP DUGAN
Did you see the odds makers in Vegas
have us as only a 10-point underdog
against a top 25 team?
ROMEO DUMARS
Yeah, I saw that. Just goes to show
you, everybody takes you more seriously
once you make the bowl cut.
BOB GARCIA
That reminds me. We should spend some
time with the team going over standards
of conduct. I know it seems like low
priority now, but remember, none of
these guys has ever been to a bowl
game. And this one’s in Hawai’i. Lots
of opportunity to get into trouble in
the week we’re there.
BILLY
You’re right, Bob. And it shouldn’t be
a low priority. Let’s build some time
into each practice and in your
individual unit meetings to hammer
conduct standards into them.
BILLY
I spoke to headmaster Stephens
yesterday and told him J.R. would miss
the first week or two of the winter
trimester.
GALE (V.O.)
Billy, he’s going to miss more than the
first week or two. You know that.
BILLY
Gale, the boy doesn’t even know you’re
taking him out of school. He thinks
it’s just a week in Texas over the
break.
10.
GALE (V.O.)
I’ll tell him when he comes down. I’ll
explain everything to him then. Have
you taken care of his travel
arrangements?
GALE (V.O.)
If you’re too busy I’ll have Mattie
handle it.
BILLY
No, Donna will take care of it as soon
as we’re off the phone.
A long beat.
BILLY
Gale, after Hawai’i I can take a
week...
GALE (V.O.)
That’s too soon for me, Billy.
BILLY
Gale, what do you want me to do? What
do you want me to say? That I can’t
live without you? I can’t.
GALE (V.O.)
You really don’t understand do you?
Maybe I wouldn’t have married you if I
knew you had a son. Maybe I would
have. But you never gave me a chance
to decide, Billy. Do you have any idea
how humiliating it was for me to look
into that woman’s face and realize that
you’ve lied to me for 20 years.
BILLY
I’ll call Headmaster Stephens this
afternoon and let him know J.R. won’t
be back next year.
11.
GRACIE
Do you mind?
J.R.
(mouth full)
No. Go ahead.
GRACIE
How old are you?
J.R.
(beat)
Seventeen.
GRACIE
Liar. You’re 16, tops.
J.R.
What do you care?
GRACIE
(swallowing)
You got CS for dealing?
J.R.
Yeah, so?
GRACIE
Me too. Mostly E and a little blow.
Felix and Kumar got it for DUIs.
GRACIE
They’re not here.
J.R.
I thought they were you boys. I mean,
you seem to have some history together.
12.
GRACIE
Me and Kumar hooked up a few times last
summer. That’s over now. He was a
lousy lay anyway. It’s just a
coincidence we got CS together. You’re
that football coach’s son aren’t you?
GRACIE
You on the football team at your
school?
J.R.
No. It’s not my thing.
GRACIE
Good. I hate jocks. Big muscles,
little dicks.
J.R.
I wouldn’t know about that.
She slurps the last of her soda. Without asking she takes
his and slurps it all. He just watches.
GRACIE
You had sex yet?
J.R.
What, you mean today?
GRACIE
No, I mean with a girl.
J.R.
I’m not gay!
GRACIE
Prove it.
GRACIE
That wasn’t bad for your first time.
J.R.
(winded)
Who says it was my first time?
GRACIE
(a sweet, knowing smile)
It’s okay. You’ll get better at it. I
promise.
GABRIELLE (V.O.)
Attorneys for Walter “Brick Wall”
Henderson say the senior defensive end
was wrongfully stripped of his
scholarship and, as a consequence,
robbed of an opportunity to enter the
NFL draft, where he stood to earn
millions. Henderson is seeking $3
million in punitive damages from
Washington Tech. Also named in the
suit are athletic director Charlotte
Webb and head football coach Billy
Donahue. Henderson, a team captain who
was named to the All-WAC team last
year, was suspended from the Sea Devils
in October after it was disclosed that
he and two other male Washington Tech
students were implicated in the alleged
sexual assault of a female stripper.
As reported on ESPN, the Bellingham
County District Attorney dismissed all
charges against the three students when
the stripper admitted that she had
consensual sex with the young men
during a fraternity party. That story
was first reported by ESPN.
CHARLOTTE
How many media queries did we get on
this today, Jim?
FLYNN
Around 40. The good news is this story
didn’t get much traction outside of the
sports shows. None of the national
cable or broadcast news networks called
for comment.
CHARLOTTE
But we can expect more protests and the
negative publicity that goes with it,
right?
FLYNN
I’m afraid so. But that should be
limited to regional coverage.
FLYNN
I’m sorry about this Coach. I’m sure
Wall’s just going along with what his
lawyers tell him to do. I’m sure it’s
nothing personal against you.
BILLY
I can’t say that I blame him.
(looks at Charlotte)
We didn’t give him much of a chance.
CHARLOTTE
Thank you, Jim. We’ll touch base with
you in the morning.
CHARLOTTE
It was the right thing to do, Billy.
For the school and for the program.
BILLY
You know we’re never going to see eye
to eye on that, Charlotte.
15.
CHARLOTTE
I know, Billy. I know.
Beat.
CHARLOTTE
How’s Gale’s mother doing?
BILLY
(covering)
Not great. Gale will be in Texas for a
while.
CHARLOTTE
I left Ronald once. God, that was 20
years ago. It took me years to get over
what he did. Truth is you never really
get over it.
BILLY
Charlotte, whatever you think is going
on between me and Gale...
CHARLOTTE
I’m sorry, Billy. I don’t mean to pry.
I know it’s none of my business. This
is going to sound strange coming from
me, considering Gale can barely stand
to be in the same room with me.
BILLY
Charlotte, that’s not true.
CHARLOTTE
Billy, I’m a woman. We know these
things. Anyway, take it from someone
who’s been there, whatever’s got you
two apart, you can overcome it. Gale
loves you. You just have to give her
the time she needs, Billy. Just give
her time.
ACT TWO
CARA
Come on, Einstein. You owe me three
more.
ACHILLES
(panting, angry)
Bullshit! That’s 50!
CARA
Anybody ever teach you to count in
Patterson, New Jersey?
ACHILLES
East Orange, bitch! Anybody ever tell
you you’re an asshole?
CARA
(impish grin)
Moi?
CARA
Three more.
CARA
We’ve hit all the major points we laid
out for you when we got started.
When’s your next physical with Doc
Fiorenza?
ACHILLES
Next Tuesday, I think.
CARA
Stand up.
17.
ACHILLES (O.S.)
You know, you could rub my johnson too
but I’m just not into flat chested
chicks.
CARA (O.S.)
Really? That what you tell the Ice
Princess when she’s jerking you off?
ACHILLES (O.S.)
Ha-ha.
CARA
Did you feel anything? Pain or
soreness?
ACHILLES
Only an urge to throw up.
BILLY
(calling out)
J.R.?
BILLY
(moving toward the commotion)
J.R.?
BILLY
Who the hell are you?
18.
GRACIE
Um...
J.R.
Dad.
BILLY
J.R.
J.R.
Uh, Dad, this is Gracie.
GRACIE
This is awkward.
Gracie and J.R. are propped against her rusted out Hyundai
saying goodbye. They stop kissing.
GRACIE
So I’ll pick you up at 8, okay, Johnny?
J.R.
Okay. Why do you keep calling me that?
GRACIE
J.R. sounds gay.
J.R.
And “Johnny” doesn’t?
GRACIE
(smiling)
Okay, what do you want me to call you?
J.R.
How about “Rocky”?
GRACIE
(giggles)
Okay. I’ll pick you up at 8, Johnny.
19.
J.R. comes in and faces his father. His first conquest has
him feeling rather cocky.
BILLY
Did that girl, Gracie, spend the night
here?
J.R.
Yeah, Dad, she did.
BILLY
And how long’s this been going on?
J.R.
(bragging)
We hooked up for the first time last
night. We’re going out again tonight.
BILLY
You used protection, right?
J.R.
Yeah, Dad, of course. Are we done now?
‘Cause I’ve got to get to school.
J.R. walks past him toward the kitchen. Billy shakes his
head as if to say, “This just keeps getting better and
better.”
SALESGIRL (O.S.)
We’re having a terrific sales on those!
You’d look fabulous in them.
Cake shifts her focus from the mirror to the clothes the
salesgirl is referring to then to the super cute, super
thin SALESGIRL (22). Cake looks like she’s going to throw
up.
SALESGIRL
You want to try something on, Sweetie?
20.
CAKE
Remember what you said about Laquitia
and her girlfriend? How they were in a
real, meaningful relationship and that
you and I wouldn’t know what that
looked like even if it came up and bit
us in the ass.
CARA
Yeah. You know I was having a bad day,
right?
CAKE
Do you think there’s something wrong
with us? I mean, with me?
CARA
What? What are you talking about?
CAKE
Cat, do you love Lindsay?
The question catches her off guard, like the thought never
crossed her mind.
CARA
Yeah, I guess.
CAKE
You guess?
CARA
Yeah. I’m not saying he’s the man I
want to marry, but...
CAKE
Then why do you cry when you talk about
losing Dallas? Do you love Dallas?
CARA
What’s going on with you, Cake?
CAKE
I’m 18 years old and my life sucks. I
hate my life. I hate this town. I
hate working at the restaurant. I hate
my mom. I hate my dad. I can’t count
(MORE)
21.
CAKE (CONT’D.)
the number of guys I’ve fucked and I
can’t remember feeling anything for any
one of them when we were done. You’ve
been with three guys your whole life
and loved each one of them so much it
hurt even to think of losing them. I’m
just a fucking whore, Cat, and
everybody in this town knows it.
CARA
Cake, don’t say that...
CAKE
(tears streaming)
Don’t I deserve better, Cat? Don’t I?
MARIA
Thank you, Mattie. And please, tell
Gale that if there’s anything I can do
for her while she’s away, don’t
hesitate to ask. Okay. Bye-bye.
HAROLD
Kitten, Mathilda is Gale’s personal
assistant. It’s her job to take care
of things in Gale’s absence. And I
understand she’s quite good at it.
MARIA
I know, Sweetie, but she handles
business things. I can help with
family things, things that a wife does.
HAROLD
Kitten, I absolutely forbid you from
having sex with Billy Donahue. That’s
where I draw the line.
22.
MARIA
You silly boy.
BILLY
So this is the kind of room you get
when you’re on the board of directors
of the hospital?
HAROLD
Coach, what a pleasant surprise!
BILLY
Maria, how are you?
MARIA
Good, Billy.
BILLY
Looks like you’re about ready to check
out of this luxury spa, Harold. Maybe
you’ll be able to use these after all.
BILLY
Complements of the booster association.
HAROLD
I’ll be there, you can count on it.
MARIA
Billy, I was just on the phone with
Mattie. Gale’s going to stay in Texas
longer than another week?
BILLY
‘Fraid so, Maria.
MARIA
Well, I know Mattie’s there to help
manage your affairs while Gale is gone,
but if there’s anything I can do for
you, Billy, just ask.
23.
BILLY
Did I miss something?
MARIA
No, Billy. Harold’s just a little low
on his meds. Sweetie, I’ll go to the
nurse’s station and see if I can get
you some more.
HAROLD
I saw the news. This suit that Wall’s
bringing is nothing more than a
nuisance. You don’t have anything to
worry about, Billy.
BILLY
What are you doing watching the news?
Aren’t you supposed to check out when
you’re recovering from a heart attack?
HAROLD
You don’t get to be as rich as I am by
checking out, Billy.
BILLY
Nuisance or not, it’s got Chancellor
Reed’s shorts in a knot. I’m sure not
going to be on his Christmas list this
year.
HAROLD
He’s Jewish. And you don’t have to
worry about him anyway. I’ve already
talked with Charlotte and key members
of the board of regents. Win or lose
against BYU, you’ll get your contract
extension after the first of the year.
Congratulations, Billy.
ACT THREE
BETHANY
I’ll get it!
BETHANY
Hi, Coach D!
BILLY
(trying to remember her name)
Hello...
BETHANY
Bethany.
BILLY
Right. Hello, Bethany.
BETHANY
Come on in. Mom’s been expecting you.
She takes his coat and he crosses the room, shaking hands
and nodding at guests as he moves.
BILLY
Charlotte?
CHARLOTTE
Billy! I’m so glad you decided to come.
BILLY
Thanks for inviting me. I know you
said this was a different group of
people, but I don’t think I recognize
anyone out there.
CHARLOTTE
We entertain so often throughout the
year but it’s almost always an official
affair of some sort – boosters, alums
you know. So every year Ronald and I
like to host one get-together that’s
just for our closest friends.
BILLY
(beat, understanding)
Oh. Well, thanks again for having me.
BILLY
I’m not too great in the kitchen, but
is there anything I can do to help
here?
CHARLOTTE
No, we’re pretty much set. But you can
go out, get a scotch and mingle. We’re
just waiting for my goddaughter to
arrive.
BETHANY
I’ll get it!
CHARLOTTE
All right, now that everyone’s here,
let’s eat.
JOCELYN
Elle, is it true you’re getting a
promotion at ESPN?
GABRIELLE
Yes, Jocelyn, it’s true. I’ll be a
contributor for “ESPN 360” and doing
some producing too.
CHARLOTTE
Seems Elle’s reporting on the stripper
rape case got people’s attention in
Bristol.
BRAD
Will you move to Connecticut?
GABRIELLE
Not right away. I’ll work from ESPN’s
L.A. studios, at least for the next
year. I just found a place in Santa
Monica.
BILLY
So does this mean you won’t be covering
Wa Tech sports any more?
GABRIELLE
Would you miss me, Coach?
BILLY
Hmm, I don’t know. Would I miss about
50 tough questions before halftime and
another 50 after the game?
27.
GABRIELLE
You’ll only have to tolerate me for one
more game.
BILLY
That’s 100 questions.
GABRIELLE
Tough questions.
RONALD
She’ll be anchoring Sports Center
before we know it.
When J.R. and Gracie reach the porch, Kumar exits the
house. He’s stoned but still taken aback by the pairing of
J.R. and Gracie.
KUMAR
What the fuck?
Gracie rolls her eyes at him. She tries to walk past but
Kumar blocks their way.
J.R.
Kumar, what’s up?
KUMAR
Listen, dude, you better double up on
rubbers with this one. No telling what
shit she’s got crawling up in there.
GRACIE
C’mon, Johnny. Ignore this loser.
Gracie and J.R. head inside but not before J.R. and Kumar
do a stare down.
28.
KUMAR (O.S.)
Fucking whore!
JAMAL
Gigi! Whaddup, shorty?
GRACIE
Jamal! Where have you been? I haven’t
seen you in months.
JAMAL
I had to go outta state for a few. You
know how it is. Just got back today,
though, and your boy Jamal’s ready to
par-tay!
GRACIE
Jamal this is Johnny.
(off Jamal’s suspicious look)
He’s not a narc. He’s with me.
JAMAL
Whaddup, Dog?
J.R.
Hey.
JAMAL
So, Gigi, you gonna help old Jamal get
his groove on?
JAMAL
You know I’m good for it, Gigi.
GRACIE
Call it a homecoming present, Jamal.
JAMAL
Johnny, I hope you realize what you got
here, boy. Your woman is the bomb.
GABRIELLE
Do you mind if I borrow the coach for a
few minutes?
BILLY
I knew Charlotte could play things
close to the vest, but she never let on
that you and she were related.
GABRIELLE
Well, technically we’re not. My mom
started at point guard for Charlotte
for three years at Wa Tech. Charlotte
was close to all of her players, but
she and my mom were especially close.
She was at the hospital when I was
born. Mom asked her to be my godmother
and the rest, as they say, is history.
BILLY
I’m learning that Charlotte’s full of
surprises.
(beat)
So congratulations on your new job.
Ronald’s right, you’ll be anchoring
Sports Center before we know it.
30.
GABRIELLE
Thanks. And, Billy, thank you for
trusting me. I know none of what
happened with Wall was easy for you,
personally or professionally.
BILLY
You’re a good reporter, Gabrielle. I
wish there were more like you. Guess
we’ll just have to make due with
knuckleheads like Sandy Sanderson.
GABRIELLE
He’s not so bad. Believe me, you could
do a lot worse.
BILLY
As frightening a thought as that is,
I’m sorry to say I agree with you.
GABRIELLE
(beat)
So Gale’s away in Texas.
BILLY
Yes. Her mother’s not doing so well.
GABRIELLE
I’m sorry to hear that.
(looks deeply in his eyes)
Billy...
BILLY
Yes.
GABRIELLE
You know, sometimes timing is
everything.
BILLY
What do you mean?
GABRIELLE
I mean it’s too bad Gale didn’t leave
sooner.
BILLY
What? Gabrielle...
31.
GABRIELLE
Are you telling me you haven’t felt
that there was something between us
almost since the day we met over a year
ago?
BILLY
Gabrielle, you’re a beautiful young
woman. Of course I find you
attractive. I probably should’ve done
better at keeping that under wraps.
But you must get that from every man
you come across.
GABRIELLE
Which is why I know when it’s real and
when it’s not.
GRACIE
What’s the matter, Johnny?
J.R.
Nothing.
GRACIE
C’mon, don’t keep things from me.
J.R.
But it’s all right for you to keep
things from me?
GRACIE
What are you talking about?
GRACIE
Oh. Kumar. Johnny, I told you, that’s
over like vinyl records. Forget about
him. He’s just a jealous loser.
32.
J.R.
It’s not Kumar. Even though I can’t
understand why you ever got involved
with him to begin with. Look, I have
to get out of here.
GRACIE
Come on, Johnny, talk to me. Why are
you tripping?
J.R.
Don’t call me that!
GRACIE
(cowed)
I’m sorry. You going to tell me what’s
wrong, J.R.?
J.R.
You get off with a slap on the wrist
and you’re back selling E before you
even finish community service.
GRACIE
Oh, that. Well...
J.R.
Do you have any idea what will happen
if I get picked up on a drug charge
again? Do you know what that will do
to my folks? Do you?
Beat.
GRACIE
Are you breaking up with me?
J.R.
(confused)
What? No...No! I didn’t say that.
33.
GRACIE
Good, because I don’t want to break up
with you.
J.R.
Gracie, look. I like you. A lot.
GRACIE
And I like you too...a lot.
J.R.
But if we’re going to be together, you
can’t do that anymore.
She loops her arms around his neck, presses against him,
paralyzes him with those eyes.
GRACIE
Okay...Johnny.
They kiss.
BILLY
Ronald, Charlotte. Thanks again for
having me. You’re a terrific cook,
Charlotte.
RONALD
(smiling)
Next year you and me will have to play
a little jazz set for the folks.
BILLY
I’ll start practicing now.
CHARLOTTE
And Gale can sing for us. She has such
a lovely voice.
CHARLOTTE
Elle, are you sure you won’t stay the
night? I don’t like the idea of you
driving back to Seattle so late.
GABRIELLE
I’ll be fine, Charlotte. Weather’s
clear and I’ve made the drive at this
time of night dozens of times.
BILLY
That reminds me, Charlotte. Got any
more secret relatives I should know
about? A referee or an umpire maybe?
CHARLOTTE
Sorry, Billy. When Elle went into
sports journalism I promised I’d draw a
strict line between our personal and
professional lives.
GABRIELLE
That’s right, Coach. And it’s worked
out pretty well up to this point, don’t
you think?
GABRIELLE
Goodnight.
CHARLOTTE
Give Martinique my love.
GABRIELLE
I will. Coach, would you mind walking
me to my car? I parked a little
further down the block.
GABRIELLE
Is Gale’s mother really ill?
35.
BILLY
She was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s four
years ago. Gale’s been looking for a
reason to spend some time with her.
GABRIELLE
(looks at him)
And what’s the reason’s name?
BILLY
Dallas.
(off her reaction)
He’s my son. I found out when his
mother came to Maitland after he was
hospitalized.
GABRIELLE
His mother never told you about him?
BILLY
I knew I had a son. The last time I
saw him he wasn’t quite a year old. I
never told Gale about him.
GABRIELLE
You bastard.
BILLY
I feel like an even bigger piece of
shit every time I replay it in my head.
BILLY
His mother and stepdad did a great job
raising him. He’s a good kid. A
helluva football player.
GABRIELLE
I don’t blame Gale. I would’ve left
you too.
36.
She takes takes a pen and paper from her purse, scribbles
something down and hands it to him. He looks at it.
GABRIELLE
My private number. There’s no
pressure, Billy, but it won’t work
forever.
She gets in the car and drives off. He watches the car as
it goes.
ACT FOUR
COLLEGE GUY
(to Cake)
You look pretty hot sitting there. Can
I buy you a drink to cool you off?
COLLEGE GUY
(undeterred)
You’re here a lot aren’t you? Usually
on the dance floor, though. Want to
dance?
CAKE
Have you been checking me out tonight?
COLLEGE GUY
(a hopeful smile)
Yes, I have.
CAKE
You seen me dancing?
CARA
Another one bites the dust. You’re
mowin’ em’ down like crabgrass tonight.
What was wrong with him?
CAKE
Not my type.
CARA
(beat, getting it)
You know, Cake, we don’t have to stay
here if you don’t want.
38.
CAKE
I want to be with you tonight and you
promised Lindsay you’d hang here until
the band’s set was over.
IPHONE
Four pitchers of MGD 60.
BARTENDER
Coming right up, iPhone.
IPHONE
(a good natured smile)
What’s so funny?
FRAT BOY #1
Nothing, bro. MGD 60. Really watching
those calories, huh?
IPHONE
(to Suzy)
Hey.
BARTENDER
Here you go. That’ll be $24.50
iPhone starts to peel off some bills. The frat boys and
Deltas bust up.
IPHONE
What?
FRAT BOY #2
We were just wondering if you were
going to drink all of those yourself.
39.
ACHILLES (O.S.)
That’s funny, I was just wondering the
same thing about you.
FRAT BOY #2
Iceman, hey!
ACHILLES
Put your money away, iPhone.
IPHONE
What?
ACHILLES
You just made second team All-WAC as a
freshman, and you’re going to start in
the Hawai’i Bowl. I’m sure these frat
boys want to show their appreciation by
buying a couple a rounds of beer and
maybe even some nachos for you - and
the whole offensive line. Don’t you?
FRAT BOY #1
Um...yeah. Sure, Iceman.
Lindsay and the band are packing their gear. Cara and Cake
chat up the BAND MEMBERS.
ACHILLES
Sorry, I overslept.
ACHILLES
To tell you the truth I’m surprised
you’re up so early. You and Blum were
going at it petty good last night.
CARA
Perv.
ACHILLES
Hey, I’m not the one yelling “Ride me,
big boy, ride me” all night. That
reminds me: could you lube Blum up
before you ram your strap-on up his
ass? He moans like a girl.
CARA
You ready to go now?
41.
BILLY J.R.
(knocking again)
J.R., I’m coming in son.
GRACIE
Hi you.
J.R.
‘Morning. What time is it?
GRACIE
Why, you looking for a reason to leave?
J.R.
No. Of course not.
GRACIE
Then it’s time for you to make me come
again.
J.R.
What?
J.R.
Does he have to be in here?
GRACIE
She has a name. And yes, Ethel goes
where she wants, when she wants. It
didn’t bother you last night that she
was here.
42.
J.R.
Shit, it was so dark I didn’t see her
last night.
GRACIE
Just block her out. Or pretend we’re
doing a porno and she’s the director.
J.R.
What?
GRACIE
(mocking a classic porno
riff)
Boom-chick-a-bow-bow-boom.
J.R.
That’s silly.
She grabs his head, sticks her tongue down his throat,
wraps her arms and legs around him. ETHEL HOWLS.
J.R.
Jesus!
J.R.
(worried)
Gracie, make her stop! She’s going to
wake your folks!
GRACIE
Don’t worry about them. Dad’s not due
out of Walla Walla for two years and
even if my mom’s here she’s probably so
stoned she’d sleep through an
earthquake.
Gracie and J.R. come in. He surveys the place in the cold
light of day. It’s obvious from his expression he had no
idea what he was walking into last night.
GRACIE
Maybe we should go out to get something
to eat.
ACHILLES
You know I was just joking about you
and Lindsay, right?
CARA
You made a joke?
ACHILLES
Yeah, you know, when I said you ram a
strap-on...
She cuts him a look. He gets it. A few more yards then:
CARA
I noticed pictures of a girl on the
mirror in your room. She your
girlfriend back in Jersey?
ACHILLES
You went in my room?
CARA
Yeah. Me and Lindsay have sex in there
on Saturdays when you’re at games.
ACHILLES
Yeah, she’s my girlfriend. Her name’s
Portia.
44.
CARA
Is she nice or a stuck up bitch like
the Ice Princess?
ACHILLES
Her father’s the reverend of our
church. She’s always volunteering and
stuff. Most people think she’s nice.
CARA
So why do you cheat on her? I mean,
besides the fact that you’re a guy and
all guys are dogs when you get right
down to it. But if you took your dick
out of the equation, why do you feel a
need to be with other girls when you
know that she’s the one who loves you?
ACHILLES
You don’t really screw around in my
room, do you?
ACT FIVE
J.R.
Mom, I’ve been thinking about it and I
don’t want to come to Texas over the
break.
GALE (V.O.)
But J.R., Sweetheart, it’s all been
arranged. Nanna can hardly wait to see
you. She talks about you every day
now.
J.R.
Mom, half the time Nanna doesn’t even
know who I am and the other half of the
time she thinks I’m dad. Can’t we just
visit her over the summer?
GALE (V.O.)
J.R. your father and I have already
discussed this. With me here and him
focused on preparing for the Hawai’i
Bowl, we don’t want you going around
unsupervised. Not after what you did.
J.R.
Then why don’t you just come home? You
could bring Nanna here. That way
she’ll see me and dad and it won’t
matter which of us she’s talking to,
she’ll always be right.
GALE (V.O.)
J.R., stop it! You’re being
insensitive and rude. Nanna’s 88 years
old. I’m not going to take her away
from everything she knows just so you
can stay holed up in your room glued to
that computer of yours.
J.R.
I’m sorry I said that, Mom. I really
am. But, Mom, I just want to stay home
over break. Can’t you understand?
J.R.
Mom?
GALE (V.O.)
I’ll have to speak to your father about
this.
GALE (V.O.)
What do you mean he has a girlfriend?
BILLY
Apparently they just started going out
this week. Gale, you know how it is...
GALE (V.O.)
He’s not having sex with this girl, is
he?
BILLY
(beat)
Gale, listen...
GALE (V.O.)
My God, Billy! I’m gone for a couple of
weeks and you let our 15-year-old son
have sex with some little tramp!
BILLY
I didn’t let him to do anything, Gale.
GALE (V.O.)
Well you sure as hell didn’t stop him,
did you?
BILLY
(voice rising)
What do you want me to do, Gale, sit on
him?! I’ve got a bowl game to prepare
for for Christ’s sake! And I’m here by
myself!
GALE (V.O.)
Are you saying this is my fault?!
BILLY
No, I’m not saying it’s anybody’s
fault. Gale, he’s a teenage boy. It
was bound to happen eventually.
GALE (V.O.)
I don’t believe you just said that!
He’s a 15-year-old boy, Billy! How old
is this girl?
BILLY
I don’t know. Sixteen, maybe 17.
GALE (V.O.)
Oh My God!
BILLY
Gale, can you please calm down?
GALE (V.O.)
Wait a minute – you’ve met her? Where?
BILLY
Gale...
GALE (V.O.)
Where did you meet her, Billy?
(beat)
OH MY GOD! You let our son screw a
teenage girl in our home!?
Gale walks through the terminal with her mother, ROSE RYAN.
TONY
I’ll get it.
TONY
Hey, Sonny.
He steps inside.
SONNY
Hey, Uncle Tone.
TONY
Jake’s not here.
SONNY
I didn’t come to see him. Cake needs me
to set up the Bluetooth in her car.
TONY
Oh.
(calling out)
Babe, is Cake home?
SOFIA (O.S.)
Catherine’s upstairs in her room.
TONY
(calling up)
Cupcake! Sonny’s here to work on your
car!
CAKE
How long’s this going to take?
49.
SONNY
Just a few minutes. That’s all.
CAKE
(turning to go)
Just leave the phone in the house when
you’re done.
SONNY
Hey, where are you going?
CAKE
It’s cold out and you don’t need me
here for this.
SONNY
Maybe it’s so cold because of you.
CAKE
You have something to say, say it
Sonny, then leave.
SONNY
C’mon, Cake. Let’s not fight.
SONNY
I’m sorry about the other day. What I
said. I know...
CAKE
Please, Sonny, I don’t want to talk
about that.
SONNY
Okay. We’ll just forget what I said.
Go back to the way things were.
CAKE
No! Sonny we have to stop.
SONNY
But, Cake...
CAKE
(raising her hand)
No Sonny! Enough! It’s a sin! You
know that.
50.
SONNY
Don’t get all pius on me, Cake. You
think I don’t know about all the guys
you’ve been with? The married ones?
CAKE
Shut up!
SONNY
Cake, please. Let’s not overreact.
CAKE
Overract! Jesus, Sonny, we’re first
cousins!
SONNY
If it was so wrong, would we be so good
together?
CAKE
It’s sick and it’s wrong and it’s over!
SONNY
Cake, now...
CAKE
I mean it, Sonny! Over.
CAKE
I swear to God, Sonny, if you ever
touch me again I’ll tell my father
everything.
SONNY
Don’t even joke about that, Cake. He’d
kill you.
CAKE
(coldly)
And who do you think would be next?
did Lindsay’s BMW. She jogs across the street toward the
roadster.
DALLAS
Red.
CARA
Do you love her?
DALLAS
What?
CARA
The girl inside. Do you love her?
DALLAS
Look, Red...
CARA
If my being with Lindsay hurts you half
as much as it hurts me to know there’s
a girl in there, well, I guess I
deserve to feel this bad. I’m sorry. I
know I was being selfish and childish,
Dallas. I wish I could undo that. And
if you love that girl in there, I’ll
understand and accept it.
CARA
But I can’t just go away without you
knowing something.
DALLAS
What?
52.
The Gorgeous Blonde from the parking lot comes to the door
wearing nothing but Dallas’ football jersey.
CARA
I love you, Dallas.
Off Dallas...
FADE OUT.
