ASSIGNMENT-2 (SHORTFILM REVIEW- “How much does your building weigh Mr. Foster”)

Future lies in the hands of those who believe in it , is the

essence of this movie .We get know from this movie a different facet of
the architect Norman foster. His aim is to make a difference through his
work and to have unique take on the concept of his structure. He has
carved a niche for himself in the architecture industry by sheer
perserverance. His childhood being in middle class family and his
parents workers gifted him the quality of hard- work. This quality made
him strive hard and achieve success in his career. His passion for
sketching is what makes him a better visionary . His architecture is
inspired from his passion for aeroplanes which makes him visualize his
building from an aerial perspective.
His main concern is that his building should be sustainable and
his structure should breathe natural. We can seen this context in his
Herest tower1 which is an excellent use of recycled steel and rainwater to
have proper natural ventilation. His tower stands strong among the
majestic New York towers with its own innovative and ground breaking
design. This movie shows that what is achieved when a visionary meets
an inventor. His discerning spirit made possible for him with
Buckminisiter Fuller. They did project Oxford Beckett theatre2 together.
The very title of this movie is a question asked by Fuller. He made
Normon Foster think in different direction. He taught Norman to be
energy and environment sensitive.
He did not confined to innovative green buildings but he tried to
acclimatize himself with advanced technology . It is this devotion to the
latest architectural technology that earned him his place in the High-Tech
movement. Salisbury centre of visual arts is the very product of this
movement . Its revolutionary design features an innovative, prefabricated
modular structure that is cleverly designed to allow for subsequent
extension. He still tries to push boundaries in architectural technology.
Apart from been environmentalist and supporter of technology he
still focuses on the essence of the structure. he tries maintain the
originality of the structure and respecting its history. This can be seen in

his reinvention of Reichstag3. He tried show sensitivity towards its history

but art the same time introduced advanced techniques to show its rebirth
.This shows how architecture depicts the nature of a place. Normon
foster was able to achieve the balance between good and an meaning
full architecture.
This movie is overpowered by the narration .The architects4 work
speaks for itself and the personality he is grown into is mostly
contributed by his parents, his undying spirit for perfection and setting
the standards higher every time. He also faced some of the dark times of
his life in a very subtle and optimistic spirit. His whole legacy can be
explained in this quote ` your life is a message to the whole world ,make
sure its inspiring.
